It seems intuitive: Increasing the fuel-efficiency of automobiles — or anything else that runs on gas — should lower the demand for oil. But guess what? It ain't so. "It is a confusion of ideas to suppose that the economical use of fuel is equivalent to a diminished consumption," Jevons wrote. "The very contrary is the truth."
