Get government out of the charity business ~ By Star Parker

Star Parker to lawmakers: Don't try to fix programs, just end them

According to a 2012 Congressional Research Service report and the staff of Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., who commissioned the report, combined annual federal and state spending on anti-poverty programs exceeds $ 1 trillion. About 75 percent comes from the federal government.

These funds, which include programs such as welfare, food stamps, low-income housing programs, child-care assistance, etc. are programs that mostly came onto the American scene with the War on Poverty and, in that they are focused on helping the less fortunate, are what it is usually considered charity.

These programs are notoriously wasteful and are too often counterproductive and motivated by political gain rather than genuine desire to really help people.

Funds extracted from taxpayers, dispensed by bureaucrats, under rules and conditions designed by other bureaucrats, remove personal responsibility from both the giving and receiving ends of the equation.
Without any doubt in my mind, Star Parker explains what the problem is, and how to solve it, all in one column.  Poverty itself is not the problem.  Handing out entitlements has only enabled the recipients to bring about generational poverty.  The ambition to get oneself off of the poverty train by their own efforts has been replaced by a willingness to accept handouts.

Our Founding Fathers understood that concept.  They had no intention of creating a government so willing to become the charity for the people.  The Founders understood the true concept of charity where people who have prospered would willingly contribute to the well-being of all citizens in need.  They knew that real charity was not a forced-giving program through taxes confiscated from a portion of income.  Americans, they knew, had love in their hearts, and wouldn't let people simply starve to death.

By all means, the statement by the farmer to Davy Crockett was what should have been remembered: “You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and favoritism and corruption, on the one hand, and robbing the people on the other.” That's an intelligent analysis by the farmer, but I wish he would added,"But once the government becomes a charity, it will never be able to be reversed, just like the income tax. (Not even with a Republican Congress!?)"

As Star so aptly put it a week ago:
One of President Ronald Reagan’s most famous quips was that the nine most terrifying words in the English language are “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.

It is indeed sad that America today is plagued, indeed threatened, by the very institution it invented to protect its own citizens Government.
It wouldn't be so dismal to think about the future of America if a few more people were aware of this.  There could still be hope, but I'm not holding my breath, not even with the Republican landslide in the 2014 Midterm election  Just sayin'...

From wnd.com Commentary

The story is told that when Tennessee frontiersman Davy Crockett served in the U.S. Congress (between 1827 and 1835) he voted for a bill appropriating $20,000 for relief for victims of a fire that broke out in Georgetown.

When he returned home, a constituent farmer chastised him for supporting the bill and for “giving what is not yours to give.”

The farmer told Crockett the Constitution does not grant Congress the power to give charity, and if it did, “You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and favoritism and corruption, on the one hand, and robbing the people on the other.

We are far from those days. Supreme Court decisions over the years have opened the door for rationalizing just about anything under the spending authority of the Congress.

Those who crafted the U.S. Constitution did not intend limitations on the federal government’s role out of mean-spiritedness. They did so out of a sense of what would best serve the public.

It stands to reason that bureaucrats spending other people’s money – funds taken by force – is not going to produce good results.

Copyright law as a tool for state censorship of the Internet ~ By Maira Sutton

It’s a norm that is reinforced and exported abroad by dozens of trade agreements that carry provisions that mirror, and further entrench, restrictive interpretations of the DMCA. The South Korea-U.S. free trade agreement (aka KORUS) and the Australia-U.S. free trade agreement (aka AUSFTA) are just two examples. The language in those agreements was actually a lot like the DMCA. But the negotiators abstracted the language just enough so that U.S. law could still be compliant with it, while the other countries could be pressured to enact even harsher domestic restrictions. Following their trade agreements with the U.S., South Korea enacted a three-strikes takedown regime, and Australia was pushed into enacting policies requiring intermediaries to terminate the accounts of repeat infringers.

Now we’re seeing a disturbing trend where governments and state-friendly agencies are abusing DMCA takedowns to silence political criticism. Here are the cases we know about where governments have misused U.S. copyright law to censor the Internet [read column].
Nobody is suggesting that the DMCA is not needed to protect the owners of copyright-protected materials, such as movies, music, books, articles, etc. If somebody is uploading pirated movies or music to their website, they deserve to be taken down. But in this column, we find out that the DMCA law is providing an opportunity for governments around the world to limit free speech, including our own. Here is an example that Maira Sutton included in her column:
Keeping in mind that the internet takedowns are done without due process, you could probably hire lawyers to assist in getting an account reactivated, but that could require a lot of money and time. Those that are actually innocent of breaking any copyright laws, who saw their website taken down or a youtube account terminated, are very unlikely to have the resources to fight their case. You can't defeat the leviathan governments or corporations, let alone fight city hall. They've got you right where they want you: Powerless to protect your rights.

The worst thing about this censorship tool is the knowledge that our own United States government can limit free speech if it is critical of politicians, ObamaCare, or the President and his allies. Isn't that why we have the First Amendment to that "piece of paper" we call the Constitution of the United States of America?

If our government can write laws and create regulations that seem to have a noble purpose to protect us from crooks, destroyers of the environment, and enemies of America, and then use those same laws and regulations to erode our freedom, what has gone wrong? Are our politicians and bureaucrats just too incompetent to be enacting those laws or writing regulations? Or, are they a bunch of control freaks who purposely use vague language in those laws and regulations so that a President can just use his pen and phone to circumvent himself around the laws to do the bidding of his supporters?

What this is about is the ability for governments around the world, including our own, to develop methods to keep their establishments in power, and keep the citizens from being able be able to revolt, let alone, protect our freedom.  Our ability to stay free is being eroded, and our ability to spread the word about the "takedown" of our freedom is being silenced.  Just sayin'...

Copyright law as a tool for state censorship of the Internet
By Maira Sutton

Posted on December 3, 2014 by Electronic Frontier Foundation

From PersonalLiberty.com

This story by global policy analyst Maira Sutton originally
appeared on the website of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
When state officials seek to censor online speech, they’re going to use the quickest and easiest method available. For many, copyright takedown notices do the trick. After years of lobbying and increasing pressure from content industries on policymakers and tech companies, sending copyright notices to take media offline is easier than ever.

The copyright law that state actors most often invoke is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The DMCA was the first major digital copyright law passed in the United States, creating strict procedural rules for how and when a copyright holder can claim that uploaded content infringes on their copyright. U.S.-based tech companies that receive these infringement notices must comply with these rules to receive their safe harbor — the protection they have from being liable for hosting unlawful user content.

The DMCA has become a global tool for censorship, precisely because it was designed to facilitate the removal of online media. The law carries provisions on intermediary liability, among many other strict copyright enforcement rules, which induce websites, Internet service providers and other such “intermediaries” to remove content that is alleged to be a copyright infringement.

The lonesome death of Eric Garner ~ By Harry Siegel

Anyone unsure why so many people of color are upset with the police, and suspicious of the American justice system, put your politics down, open your eyes and watch the videos.

There’s more to be said on another day about broken-windows policing. Garner was known to cops for selling loose cigarettes, though he wasn’t doing that when he was arrested and killed(My comment: That statement may require some research, as I have heard information that contradicts that.)

There is more to be said another day about the dishonesty or intellectual confusion of those activists, protesters and politicians who appear to view cops as the only real criminals.

But fear of police and lost faith in justice are real, corrosive forces. That fear makes decent people of color feel that society places a lower value on their lives. It makes parents and their children fear the very people who are supposed to be protecting them. Good policing demands community buy-in, so perception itself matters.
I did not post this story because I agree with Harry. He may have made some good points that we can contemplate on as long as there are still legs on this news event, but as to him trying to supplant some kind of racial incident as being the ONLY or MAIN ingredient in the death of Eric Garner, he is totally incorrect.

So, the primary subject of the story, Mr. Eric Garner, happened to be African-American. But, does that necessarily mean that the treatment that he received had anything to do with race? Of course it may have played a part, but it's very unrealistic for anyone to believe that was the primary catalyst for the tragedy that happened on the New York streets, or in the Grand Jury. There are other issues.

Perhaps Mr. Garner was trying to help support his family by a little entrepreneurship because of a lack of good employment opportunities. (Hmm, that CAN happen with a rap sheet showing 31 arrests.) Or, maybe it is the fact that the excessive taxes collected on cigarettes by the government entities - city, state, and federal - made his trade a profitable enterprise, and thus, worth the risk of breaking laws. And it wasn't like he was selling heroin or cocaine.

As Rand Paul suggested last night, perhaps politicians that wrote those laws also directed the enforcement of them, as Governor Cuomo (D-NY) did by setting up a STRIKE force to go after those on the street selling "loosies" (individual cigarettes bought in states or Indian Reservations that charge less or no taxes) - just because the government entities were losing the lucrative tax revenues from those of us with the nicotine addiction.

While I agree with Harry Siegel that the police may have used excessive force to subdue Eric Garner in an attempt to arrest him, I think that Siegel is too much like the usual suspects that are trying to make it all about race! Perhaps the biggest disgust we should all have, as Americans, is that the government may be trying to gain too much power and using the police in ways that affect ALL of our civil liberties. Just sayin'...

It’s the second Eric Garner video that made me cry.

Not the one where Officer Daniel Pantaleo chokes Garner for 15 seconds before smashing his head into the sidewalk for 10 seconds as other cops hold down and cuff Garner, ignoring the pleas he issued with the last air in his lungs:

I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.”

It’s the video shot minutes later as Garner lies dying among men and women in uniforms, men and women who seemed not to give half a damn, that broke me down. Here’s the scene:

Black America has a Choice to Make ~ By Sonnie Johnson

But I also know Mike Brown didn’t walk on water. He was raised in a system that taught him to hate the police and that they were to be treated as suspect. He had no value in the life of Darren Wilson and that was his Achilles heel. Darren Wilson had a reason to live and he wasn’t going to go quietly. I have a family that is my reason for living and I wouldn’t go quietly either. That’s a colorless value I can never ignore.

So whom do I feel sorry for? Which side do I take? Neither, I know too much to play this game. In fact, I Change the Game. Black America has a choice to make. This year they have seen the outcome of following the Progressives. Next year, I will show them the outcome of following a conservative. I promise we will only burn down buildings with the intention of rebuilding them.
Sonnie will have plenty of allies who happen to be successful, Conservative, and black, such as Dr. Ben Carson, Allen West, and of course, our friend Zo (Alfonzo Rachel), and many more.  She won't be alone, and she will have a lot of material to back up her beliefs.

Despite having a large number of Conservatives of all races that will be cheering her on, and applauding her obvious aptitude for being a great columnist, Sonnie Johnson will also have to deal with a crowd that isn't quite so pleased with her efforts. In a column by Caroline Schaeffer (about 6 months ago), "Stacey Dash Hired By Fox News, Liberals Once Again Expose Their Intolerance For Black Conservatives," you'll see an excellent illustration of how the left treats blacks that have succeeded on their own merits:
Liberals were quick to expose their intolerance of a minority who holds conservative views, calling her a “token” and “self-hating.” The idea that she is a smart, engaging commentator who is appreciated for her contributions? Impossible, they say! It’s only about her race!
The problem for Sonnie, and for all of us on the Conservative side, is that the progressive mentality is already baked into the minds of those that we aim to assist in an attitude adjustment. We can do it, but it might take several generations.  That old pendulum takes awhile to swing from slavery to freedom to tyranny to slavery and back to freedom.  It takes time.  But hey, Sonnie Johnson, keep on keeping on!  And always remember this:

The average American is always gong to be afraid to be "different," but once they know that they aren't alone, it's a game changer.  And that goes just fine with, "Change the Game."  Just sayin'...

They did it. Progressives kept to their word and burned Ferguson to the ground. The National Guard was held back, while the St. Louis suburbs were set on fire and businesses were looted and destroyed. Shots were fired in the direction of police and law enforcement filled the air with tear gas. Oh what a Progressive legacy…

Who am I supposed to feel sorry for? The tension in Ferguson didn’t spring up over night. If the people of Ferguson would have a good relationship with the police force, they wouldn’t have been ready to riot with a single spark. This entire situation would have been prevented if the citizens and law enforcement didn’t look at each other like suspects.

But that’s the mold Progressive America has created. The police are hit with government statistics that paint black males as violent criminals. They are forced to act upon those statistics. Therefore, they look at black males with more caution.

Don't Mix Turkey and Politics ~ By Sonnie Johnson

Don’t use Thanksgiving as an “I told you so” occasion. Look at the people that surround you, this is your family, by blood or by choice. Appreciate them. Find out about their lives and if there is something you can do to help. Congratulate them in their success and give them encouraging words to lift them from failure.

In short, don’t talk about your politics but act upon your principles. We are going to spend the next two years wrapped up in another political campaign. We are going to have plenty of time to disagree and fight. Take this time to understand, we are not fighting an enemy to the death, we are trying to shape the course of a nation with our family and friends.
While watching The Five yesterday on the Fox News Channel, I was introduced to Sonnie Johnson and this column. She is a winner, and so is this great column! It's something for us to consider tomorrow when we're together with family and friends. Don't create controversy. Just eat some turkey!

Now for those of you that don't know about Sonnie, let me introduce you to her:

Sonnie Johnson, CEO of Change the Game, interviewed by Jamie Glazov

Yeah, she's pretty cool, and she knows her stuff. She's the CEO of Change the Game (ctghq.org). She's conservative, and she tells it like it is for the black people of America. And she probably won't be making the liberals very happy, either. Oh, there was something she wrote (that I think was actually part of the discussion on The Five), which was her very recent column, "10 Questions Citizens of #Ferguson Should Ask Outside Agitators." Very profound, and interesting, because I had just been discussing that subject with a friend the night before. Anyway, being that Sonnie is now on our radar, you'll be hearing a lot from her in the future.

One last thing. With the holidays and various inflictions being spread around due to the nasty weather of Winter, there may be some times in the next month that the posts here could be somewhat sparse. Call it the "Lame Duck Months" of November and December following a national election, there are also fewer people online at this time, and I see a significant decline in readers and viewers of my work here. Yes, I will still do what I do during this time, though there may be periodic gaps when I just can't get a lot done. And following the troubles in Ferguson, Missouri, is probably more than I can deal with on my own. I was overwhelmed with just too much information, and I found myself being a victim of news-junkie overload.

But thanks to Sonnie Johnson, I found myself again motivated to do what I could today, and then we'll take a little break from politics for a few days. That will be SO nice. There is much to be thankful for this year, and many people to keep in our prayers. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving! And I'm not just sayin'...

If you watch Red Eye, you know how I feel about mixing alcohol and politics. Don’t do it. It's a recipe for disaster, at least if you are talking to me. I tend to not care a single iota about your feelings or reasoning and an intelligent conversation is impossible.

I have the same tendency towards mixing turkey and politics. Conservatives have to learn to be tactical. We can’t be starting a fight over the cranberry sauce because we are upset Obama wrote an executive order granting amnesty to 5 million illegal aliens. When your great aunt Lucy complains about her back pain, don’t blame it on Obamacare. Don’t divide the mashed potatoes to demonstrate the 46% of Americans that don’t pay a Federal income tax. You look like the jackass at the table.

The reverse is also true for the Progressives. Don’t spend 45 minutes preaching on the fuel efficiency of your Prius. No, our thoughts should not stay focused on all the third world countries that would never see such a feast. Please, Please don’t bring up any subject that involves your vagina.

Stupidity reconsidered ~ By Dr. Ben Carson

There is no question that the American people are distracted by sports and entertainment and that we confer godlike status on actors and some athletes. There is also no question that we could do more to enhance our knowledge about important issues. However, to assume that the American people are stupid and uncaring and to design programs and speeches around that assumption is arrogant, disrespectful and, frankly, very shortsighted. As has famously been said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

This most recent revelation by the unmasking of one of the chief architects of Obamacare is far from the first and only indication of a pattern of deception and manipulation by the current administration. There appears to be overt contempt for the intelligence of the populace by people who would have us believe that the Benghazi disaster was caused by an ill-defined and little-watched video, and that there was not even a smidgen of evidence of wrongdoing surrounding the “phony” Internal Revenue Service scandal, and that the government would never engage in spying on its own citizens without cause. Unfortunately, the administration knows that it can say virtually anything, and that there are some people who are so desperate to believe that it will be accepted as truth. They also know that many members of the mainstream media subscribe to their same ideology and will protect them, regardless of the consequences.
Do you know the difference between Dr. Benjamin Carson and Jonathan Gruber or Barack Obama? Dr. Carson is actually very intelligent, unlike Gruber or the President, and has many great accomplishments under his belt to prove his credibility. As a neurosurgeon, he has helped many people, mostly children. Gruber or the President?  Not so much.

Even better, he doesn't look down at all of us "stupid people." In fact, should he decide to run for President in 2016, he DEPENDS on us being intelligent enough to not fall for any further deceptions from the left-wing politicians and sycophantic mainstream media. But whether or not we stay diligently tuned in to what is actually happening in this world, is up to us.  Just sayin'...

Stupidity reconsidered
Ben Carson: Obama team will be proved wrong about intellect of the American people
Dr. Ben Carson

By Dr. Ben Carson

Published November 18th, 2014

From WND.com Commentary

Jonathan Gruber set off a firestorm of controversy, at least in the conservative media, with the recent revelation of his comments about the “stupidity of the American people,” which allowed the Affordable Care Act to be passed. In essence, he admitted that the bill was written in a way that would allow its purveyors to characterize it as the cure-all and salvation for a health-care system that was in trouble, with no danger of their deception being discovered by a populace that is trusting and naive. He obviously never intended for his comments to make it into the public sphere and did not consider the fact that someone is always recording on a smartphone.

What is truly disturbing is the fact that our government is willing to engage in the purposeful deception of the populace in order to thrust its secretive agenda onto an unsuspecting populace and a sycophantic mainstream media. As I have said many times before, Obamacare was never about health care; it was about government control and wealth redistribution. If there were real concern about the uninsured, it would have been much cheaper and considerably less complex to simply give all of the uninsured Cadillac health plans for life. I am a firm believer that health-care reform was and is needed, and I have been advocating for it for several years. It needs to be done correctly, though, and in a way that does not create different levels of access and treatment.

Obama ices the cake of his new America ~ By Barbara Simpson

Obama rules. He knows what he wants, and he’ll get it, regardless. He either forces it through Congress and the courts – see Obamacare – or he’ll use his pen and make law by executive order, regardless of whether it’s legal or constitutional.

He’s putting the icing on the cake of his new America. The only problem is that he’s made the cake under the icing rotten, and it will poison all of us unless we get ourselves back on a road to freedom.

It is that critical: We either stop this destruction of our beautiful country, or all is lost.
My memory seems to be much better than Barack Obama's or Nancy Pelosi's, who couldn't remember Jonathan Gruber, let alone, working with him. Yes, I can actually remember hearing Barack Obama saying in 2008, on several occasions, that he would transform America.

Unfortunately, most people did not have a clue what "transforming America" really meant. But some of us knew. Some of us were up-to-date with the news, and heard him tell "Joe the Plumber" Wurzelbacher that he was going to "spread the wealth." But who knew that Obama's "spreading the wealth" ideology also meant spreading our wealth to third world countries? Well, some of us did. We called it what it is: Socialism, on a global level.

And worse yet, some of us were aware that transforming America would mean allowing people into the country that would not assimilate into our American culture, requiring multiculturalism that would get so far out of control. We were aware that the values that made this country great, and free, would become politically incorrect.

Now, as we find out here in Barbara's column, we learn that our concerns were well justified. Some of us will feel vindicated by what the Babe in the Bunker writes here:
I’m probably being too easy on him by calling it “progressive.” In reality, it’s more likely socialist, communist, but no matter what you call it, totally despotic.

The changes Obama has already made, and those that are imminent, are dividing this country in more ways than the average person can imagine and probably in ways that even the above-average, thinking person did not anticipate.
Looming in the near future will be an executive action that will be one more large step towards despotism, and one large step further away from our freedom when Obama goes around Congress to give amnesty to millions of immigrants that broke the law to come to America.  I do not even understand how that is even necessary, being that bringing in refugees from around the world is totally legal for our government to do, and Obama's transformation of America has already been in progress for decades.

If we are going to "reform" our immigration policies, we may want to look at who is being allowed to legally become part of America. Just sayin'...

When I was a kid, there was a phrase that when someone put the finishing touch on something, people would say, “Well that’s the icing on the cake!

We don’t say that much now, but it would be dead right for what Barack Obama is doing to this country.

Right now, Obama and his administration are obsessed with immigration. His goal is not to reform our laws to make them work and put logical restrictions on the number and type of immigrants we allow across our borders, either as visitors, residents or, ultimately, new citizens.

His goals are to increase the numbers of people from Third-World countries we admit, to legalize those here illegally and forgive them their crimes and to increase the number of so-called refugees from Third-World countries, most of whom have no interest in becoming Americans but who want all the goodies we provide to the less fortunate.

When Barack Obama and his political henchmen get done with his plan to transform this country, we’ll end up being a country of one state.
