What Happened to Chicago’s Murder Rate After Illinois Upheld Concealed Carry and Why it Matters ~ By Mike Miller

While statistics vary and people on both sides of the gun debate differ on whether concealed carry laws help to prevent gun crime, this thing is certain: If my loved ones or I were under attack, I would want the capability to stop the attackers. Dead in their tracks, if necessary. Wouldn’t you?

Right now, it looks like great news for advocates of the 2nd Amendment. However, a word of warning, it may be too early to celebrate. From Jason Howerton at TheBlaze:

The more telling statistics will be revealed as 2014 marches on. Still, as always, correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy called the drop in crime a “trend.” He attributed the drop to the “talent level of individuals” on the police force, “intelligent policing strategies” and other programs. He did not mention the concealed carry law.

Nope, no credit for the new Illinois concealed carry law in that statement! Of course, McCarthy would want to take credit for the drop in crime! This should not be a surprise to anyone.

As you will also read in this column (see below), "...police said more than 1,300 illegal guns were recovered in the last three months." While the anti-gun liberals will also give that statistic credit for the drop in crime rates in Chicago, there is no way to know what it means without further information. But don't worry, the liberal mainstream media are still likely to mention it anyway.

And in the mean time, it doesn't sound like the military leaders believe that there should be concealed carry on military bases, even when that policy could prevent tragedies like the second Fort Hood shooting in less than five years.  Just keep in mind who their boss is: Yep, it's the Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama.  We could see that one coming, right? Just sayin'...

What Happened to Chicago’s Murder Rate After Illinois Upheld Concealed Carry and Why it Matters

In July of 2013, Illinois became the last state in the union to enact a concealed carry law. In January of this year, the state began accepting applications for permits. This week, Chicago police announced that the city’s first quarter murder rate was the lowest since 1958.

Via ABC-affiliate Eye Witness News in the Windy City:

• The first three months of the year saw 6 fewer murders than the same time frame in 2013–a 9 percent drop–and 55 fewer murders than 2012, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

• There were 90 fewer shootings and 119 fewer shooting victims, drops of 26 and 29 percent respectively, according to police statistics.

• Compared to the first quarter of 2012, there have been 222 fewer shootings and 292 fewer shooting victims. Overall crime is down 25 percent from last year, and police said more than 1,300 illegal guns were recovered in the last three months.

Coincidence? Hard to say. And too early to tell. Although, I doubt that the anti-gun crowd is celebrating the good news.

"It is disturbing to hear a member of the United States Senate suggest that entire religious and ethnic groups should automatically be considered terror suspects," said CAIR-OK Executive Director Razi Hashmi. "Our nation's leaders have a duty not to exacerbate the growing anti-Muslim sentiment in American society." Inhofe's spokesman has not replied to a WND request for comment. But advocates of the senator's position argue correct profiling would not automatically regard a Muslim as a terror suspect. Rather, it would take a passenger's religion and ethnicity into account among a variety of factors that, together, comprise a terrorist "profile." CAIR itself has been designated by the Justice Department as an unindicted terrorist conspirator, and the FBI has cut off its once-close ties with the group. CAIR's terrorist connections also have been exposed in an undercover probe that obtained internal documents confirming it acts as a front in the U.S. for international Muslim groups working to bring Saudi-style Islamic law to the nation. Speaking at a review Thursday of the Fort Hood shootings by the Senate Armed Services Committee, Inhofe said, "I'm, for one – I know it's not politically correct to say it – I believe in racial and ethnic profiling." The senator elaborated that "if you're looking at people getting on an airplane and you have X amount of resources to get into it, you get at the targets, and not my wife. And I just think it's something that should be looked into." Inhofe said that with few exceptions, such as the 1995 bombing of the Murrah federal office building in his state's capital, the perpetrators of terrorism are Muslims. Even in the Murrah case, however, a congressional committee examined strong evidence, based on an investigation by reporter Jayna Davis, that Terry Nichols and Timothy McVeigh were part of a scheme involving Islamic terrorists. Obama has resurrected a program formerly cancelled by President Bush that shares information from the CIA's spy satellites and other classified sensors with environmental scientists. The program, called Measurements of Earth Data for Environmental Analysis, or MEDEA, has already been used by a group of government-chosen scientists to measure Arctic sea ice. Norbert Untersteiner, a University of Washington professor among the chosen scientists, told the New York Times the images are "really useful," since climate change specialists "have no way to send out 500 people" across the polar caps to take similar measurements. The program is not without its detractors, however, including Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., who called the creation of the CIA Center on Climate Change and National Security "irresponsible." "In times of peace and prosperity, this center would completely defy common sense," Barrasso said in a statement last week. "But today, only two weeks after a terrorist attempted to blow up a plane over our country, this center is absolutely ridiculous. The CIA's resources should be focused on monitoring terrorists in caves – not polar bears on icebergs." Barrasso concluded, "We must ensure that our intelligence officials are focused on their most important task – protecting our country from immediate terror threats." Federal officials reportedly told the Times the program has little or no impact on current intelligence gathering, since it relies on information already archived or collected when sensors are passing over empty wilderness. Nonetheless, the images provided to scientists have been intentionally blurred or cloaked to prevent revealing the full capabilities of the CIA's spy satellites. 'Geo-engineering' for climate control In addition to opening up CIA resources, and despite Democrats in the Senate backing away from supporting Obama efforts to pass cap-and-trade legislation, the administration has maintained a commitment to expensive and even radical efforts to "save the planet" from global climate change. The FBI learned that last December, but the rest of us only found out about it a week ago. Is it still too soon to come to the conclusion that the Fort Hood shooting was an act of terrorism? Alas, it is still too early to tell at MSNBC. For Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews – at least two of whom would be severely punished under Shariah law – the shooting of George Tiller was an act of terrorism, no question. The death of a census taker in Kentucky was also an act of terrorism. (We learned this week that it was a suicide/insurance scam.) But as to Maj. The tragic murder of 14 people (I include the preborn baby) at Fort Hood last week by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan was the first terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11. This terrible act has brought to the fore all the usual suspects, recriminations and rationalizations. Each day brings new revelations or "red flags" concerning this Muslim fanatic that military officials, the FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security and even Hasan's medical colleagues knew about for years, but did nothing.

Two things shielded America's enemies from swift justice: 1) Political correctness, which I call "perversity correctness," or what conservative intellectual Michael Savage calls "political cowardice"; and 2) the Gorelick Wall.

Let's take the first shield Maj. Hasan (and technically untold millions of Muslims) have protecting him – PC, political cowardice. Our military brass and Congress are so cowed by even the appearance of singling out Muslims to prevent terrorists attacks in America that they literally looked at every other thing in the room but the 800-pound gorilla sitting in the corner shouting Allahu akbar! – until it was too late.

This insane PC policy of American cowardice toward Muslims is evidenced by the Obama administration refusing to use the phrases "war on terror," "Islamic terrorism," "terrorists" or "Muslim," preferring the less judgmental term, "manmade disaster."

The second policy America has launched against itself is the infamous "Gorelick Wall." What is the Gorelick Wall? It is a policy developed by Clinton appointee and former Deputy Attorney General Jamie Gorelick, who after the first terrorist bombings of the World Trade Center of Feb. 26, 1993, was placed as the head of a blue ribbon commission to find the causes in our internal security that allowed these bombings to occur.

In March 1995, Gorelick co-wrote a radical and treasonous memo that, in the words of Attorney General John Ashcroft, "go beyond what is legally required ... [to] prevent any risk of creating an unwarranted appearance that FISA [the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act] is being used to avoid procedural safeguards which would apply in a criminal investigation."

What does this mean? It means that the FBI cannot share intelligence with the CIA, the NSA, the DEA, ATF, the military or any other security agency in America. Many are now asking the obvious questions about why the U.S. Army did not defuse this walking time bomb before he killed 14 people. Yes, the count is 14 – 13 soldiers and an unborn, 3-month-old baby inside what should have been the safety of the mother's womb. But what is almost as appalling as the terrorist act Hasan committed at Fort Hood is the shameful and self-serving excuses being offered by Obama administration officials in an attempt to deny the obvious – that Hasan's radical Islamic religious beliefs were the primary motivation for his actions. Hint to the President Obama: Maj. Hasan did not go to a movie theater or a ballpark to kill people. He wanted to kill soldiers, soldiers who were about to be deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight the Taliban and al-Qaida. Why did he do it? Because he wants al-Qaida to win. Hasan did not have a "workplace grievance." He did not "snap under stress." There is literally no evidence of that. He was coolly rational and methodical. He wanted to kill American soldiers, he planned to do it, and thanks to epidemic political correctness in the U.S. Army and throughout our society, he was allowed to do it – on American soil. I read the names and thanked them out loud, as always. My doctor friend Bob Karns and his dear wife, Stevie, joined me, and it was deeply moving. As I looked tearfully over the rolling acres, studded with tens of thousands of stones and crosses and flat markers, I pondered as always the dreams and aspirations and relationships and family traditions that had all been stunted and blotted out. I'm sure that each of these all but forgotten heroes trained and fought willingly and proudly for the country we all love. They stood against enemies we understood, against national militaries we had identified and that had attacked us and our allies. And as I walked slowly among their graves, I asked out loud: "Would you make the same sacrifices in the conflict we're grappling with now? Would you enlist to ship out to Middle Eastern countries that have fought and killed each other for centuries, in an effort to address their problems and ancient animosities, in some vague hope that we might help them form some kind of Judeo-Christian democracy like ours?" It won't surprise you that I was met with silence. But in that silence, I saw some things more clearly than I have for years. This poor deluded fiend, Maj. Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 of his fellow American soldiers and wounded 31 more at Fort Hood, inadvertently rendered his country a vital service. He made it starkly clear, to anyone with a brain, that we're at war, not with a country or a people – but with an ideology. This demonic, lethal and inhuman ideology knows no boundaries, no ethnic or racial definitions. It's not perpetrated by one government, one tribal heritage or even one geographic base. It incubated deep in the Middle East, but has spread to many parts of the world. It has found its home in a huge world religion, Islam, but millions of devout Muslims disavow the violence and depravity associated with this jihadist ideology and even discount the specific calls for death and domination found in the pages of the Quran. (See Surah 9:5, the "verse of the sword," as an example.) But the ideology itself has a virulent life of its own, far, far worse and deadlier than any "swine flu." Once it takes root in a human mentality, it can permeate the soul, change all perspectives of humanity and morality, and become highly contagious. It has been festering and growing in Saudi Arabia, in all neighboring countries, has been taught to children from kindergarten through university and has found especially fertile ground in Islam. Maj. Hasan, born in an Arab-American family, a trained psychiatrist and military man, sought spiritual and religious counseling from a jihadist activist, Anwar al-Awlaki, who is known to have been counselor and confidant to several of the perpetrators of the 9/11 massacre. The virus spread from this adviser into the brain and soul of Hasan – who then took two loaded guns into Fort Hood and began killing everybody he could, screaming "Allah is greatest!" in Arabic. When Is an Extremist Not an Extremist?

I've heard him referred to as a "shooter" and a "gunman." He's been called "troubled" and "harassed." We know he didn't want to be deployed and his cousin called him a "good American." But extremist? No, we can't say that; we wouldn't want offend anyone. Are we that politically correct? I guess so. But there is no hesitation by Barack Obama's political arm, Organizing for America, to send out an e-mail calling tea party goers extremists: "Across the country, members of Congress who support reform are being shouted down, physically assaulted, hung in effigy, and receiving death threats. We can't let extremists hijack this debate, or confuse Congress about where the people stand." So, that's extremism, but killing 13 people isn't? If there was anyone who could be labeled "extremist," you would think it would be someone who spoke of Islamic jihad to his fellow soldiers and then acted on those feelings by picking up a weapon and killing his fellow soldiers with it. The report revealed last April by WND also showed the bureaucracy created to protect Americans after the Sept. 11 attacks by Muslim terrorists had shifted its focus to those who opposed illegal immigration, supported the literal meaning of the Second Amendment, opposed the killing of unborn babies and promoted U.S. sovereignty and independence. That's where the real terror threat came from, according to Barack Obama's administration. The report was distributed to law-enforcement offices around the country. It even resulted in American drivers being pulled over for bearing "Don't Tread on Me" stickers on their bumper. Clearly, the intent of this report was to target those the Obama administration considers to be the real enemy in America. Later, of course, she named as a top Homeland Security adviser a man who headed an organization known for its praise of both the Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist organizations. Nothing demonstrates the national security myopia of the Obama administration better than its eagerness to see threats where none exist while being unwilling and unable to see those that are staring us in the face. The Obama clan could never see domestic terrorism carried out by Islamic jihadists – no matter how many times the country actually experienced it. The man identified as responsible for the mayhem is hospitalized. We're told he's in a coma; some reports say he's paralyzed. The ramifications of the situation are enormous. When the shooting stopped, we knew what happened but didn't know if it was a single incident or part of a plot. We didn't know the details about the person pulling the triggers. But we did know that in the midst of a military installation, where one would think security would be tightest, something went radically wrong. In light of that, what are we to make of the man who is president of the United States, the man who is commander in chief of the U.S. military, the man whose press office alerted media that he would be making a statement concerning the massacre? As the cameras cut to him, he ignored the massacre for almost three minutes, during which he gives a "shout-out" to a Native American, thanks staff for a meeting on Indian affairs and promises more progress making things right for tribes. Huh? Then, and only then, almost as an aside, he refers to an event that perhaps these people didn't know about. He told what happened at Fort Hood and expressed concern for the loss of life and injuries. Cool, calm, collected and remote. What about "first things first"? What about priorities? Why not speak of the massacre first? That affected everyone there and the millions worldwide awaiting his statement on TV. Virtually every broadcast outlet had a camera or microphone pointed at him for his reaction to this attack on the U.S. Army, in fact, an attack on the United States. What does he do? Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist and devout Muslim, fatally shot 13 U.S. American citizens (12 service men and women) and wounded an additional 30 people at the largest U.S. military installation, Fort Hood, Texas. Faizul Khan, a former imam who attended services at the same mosque with Hasan for 10 years in Silver Spring, Md., described him as "very serious about his religion" and wanting an equally religious woman "who prayed five times a day and wears a hijab." Hasan vehemently opposed the U.S. missions in the Middle East, arguing with co-workers, senior officers and even patients. He quarreled with Col. Terry Lee, who testified that Hasan "said maybe the Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor." Dr. Val Finnell, a former classmate, said that Hasan was "very vocal" about equating the war on terror with a war on Islam. He said Hasan even gave a PowerPoint presentation once justifying Islamic suicide bombing. A few days before Hasan's killing spree at Fort Hood, he proved his premeditated intentions by giving away all his belongings (including his Qurans) to his neighbors, saying he would no longer need them and adding "I'm ready." Just hours before the shooting spree, he attended prayer services at a local mosque, where he normally wore street clothes but that morning wore white Muslim attire. Firsthand witnesses at the Fort Hood murder scene heard Hasan yelling, "Allahu akbar" (meaning "God is great") before he opened fire killing 13 and wounding 30 more. For six months, authorities had been tracking the extremist thinking of Hasan. Internet postings like this one go back to May 20, 2009 (spelling as in original):

There was a grenade thrown amongs a group of American soldiers. One of the soldiers, feeling that it was to late for everyone to flee jumped on the grave with the intention of saving his comrades. Indeed he saved them. He inentionally took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that 'IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE' and Allah (SWT) knows best. Hey guys! This is America. Not one Arab-American, not one Muslim-American has been attacked in response to the wholesale slaughter at Fort Hood. I'm an Arab-American, and I don't have any fear that my neighbors are going to hunt me down because of what happened at Fort Hood. I do, however, fear that I may be a victim of a terrorist attack. Imam Faizul Khan ministered to Hasan when he worshipped at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Md. Khan has been portrayed in the media as a moderate, but he sits on the national board of directors of the radical Islamic Society of North America, or ISNA. Federal prosecutors recently named ISNA as an unindicted terrorist co-conspirator in the largest terror finance case in U.S. history. ISNA, they say, is a front group for the Muslim Brotherhood, parent of Hamas and al-Qaida. "ISNA has a long and disgraceful record of promoting radical Islam," says Islamic scholar and author Stephen Schwartz, a practicing Sufi Muslim. The Brotherhood, which supports violent jihad and Islamic rule, is the subject of the bestselling new book, "Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld That's Conspiring to Islamize America." Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged shooter in yesterday's massacre at Fort Hood, played a homeland security advisory role in President Barack Obama's transition into the White House, according to a key university policy institute document. The Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University published a document May 19, entitled "Thinking Anew – Security Priorities for the Next Administration: Proceedings Report of the HSPI Presidential Transition Task Force, April 2008 – January 2009," in which Hasan of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine is listed on page 29 of the document as a Task Force Event Participant. Hasan received his medical degree from the military's Uniformed Services University School in Bethesda, Md., in 2001. Noting that the Obama administration transition was proceeding, the GWU Homeland Security Policy Institute report described on the first page the role of the Presidential Transition Task Force as including "representatives from past Administrations, State government, Fortune 500 companies, academia, research institutions and non-governmental organizations with global reach." While the GWU task force participants included several members of government, including representatives of the Department of Justice and the U.S Department of Homeland Security, there is no indication in the document that the group played any formal role in the official Obama transition, other than to serve in a university-based advisory capacity. Daniel Kaniewski, deputy director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University affirmed to WND in a telephone interview this morning that the Nidal Hasan listed as attending the meetings of the HSPI Presidential Transition Task Force was the same person as the alleged shooter in the Fort Hood massacre. Kaniewski said Hasan attended the meetings in his capacity as a member of the faculty of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine, not as a member of the HSPI Presidential Task Force. Kaniewski believed Hasan applied on the institute's website to attend the meeting and was accepted because of his professional credentials.
