Congress: Save yourselves if grid fails ~ By F. Michael Maloof

Pry pointed out that the federal government, particularly the Department of Defense and the intelligence community, has known about the EMP threat for more than 50 years.

Yet, the EMP threat has only come to the attention of most policymakers and the public relatively recently.

Such a concern only began to come to the public’s attention in unclassified reports in 2004 and 2008 by the congressionally mandated EMP Commission. The panel determined that the secrecy surrounding an EMP event was a greater threat to the nation than revelations of its destructive nature to the U.S. electrical grid system and the life-sustaining critical infrastructures.

Pry said that passage of the CIPA, introduced by Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., would “immediately mobilize thousands of emergency planners and first responders at all levels of government and educated millions of others, about EMP and how to prepare for it.”

Writing about events in the past, as in historical accounts, is called History. These are nonfictional stories about what previously happened, and if anything, get their value as a teaching tool. For as we all know, repeating mistakes of the past and expecting different results is called insanity.

Writing about current events is called News. It's weird, but I'd swear that the news we get to deal with is about the insanity in this world because of all the people that didn't pay attention to History, or thought that they could repeat history and get different results.

But, try writing about a future event, and it's called everything from speculation to paranoia. People tend to not take it seriously. And that is the problem here. I've said it before:

Is it the threat of an EMP that F. Michael Maloof may seem to be a little obsessed with?  It may seem that way, and it may even seem that I am, too.  However, it is the fact that Congress is ignoring the threat, and refusing to take any action on limiting the results of an EMP, whether natural or caused by man, that is the real obsession. Just sayin'...

WASHINGTON – The lack of congressional action on critical infrastructure legislation is hampering national preparation for a natural or man-made electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, event that could kill 90 percent of the U.S. population due to starvation, disease and societal collapse, charges an expert on the threat.

Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the congressional advisory Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, contends that the failure to pass the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act, or CIPA, is preventing action at the federal, state and local levels to protect the nation from a catastrophic EMP event.

Pry has warned that a natural or nuclear EMP event could black out the national electric grid for months or years and collapse all of the other critical infrastructures essential to sustain a modern society and the lives of 310 million Americans.

The critical infrastructures include communications, transportation, banking, finance, food, water and emergency services.

Pry calls passage of the Critical Infrastructure Protection Act to create a new National Planning Scenario focused on the EMP threat “urgently necessary.”

In February 2013, Congressman Trent Franks introduced the SHIELD Act in the House of Representatives and established in the U.S. House of Representatives the EMP Caucus.

The SHIELD Act stands for Secure High-voltage Infrastructure for Electricity from Lethal Damage. It calls on industry and government to develop, promulgate and implement standards and processes that are necessary to address the electric grid’s current vulnerabilities and shortcomings that would be affected by an EMP.

Franks has been trying to get the SHIELD Act into law since 2011. In the last session of Congress, it passed the House but failed in the Senate. His efforts stem from findings of the congressional EMP commission which spelled out in considerable detail the cascading impact of an EMP on the electrical grid system and its catastrophic impact on life-sustaining critical infrastructures that depend on it.

Experts agree that if there were an EMP event, the U.S. could see some 90 percent of its population affected. Experts believe food, water, energy and other supply systems could be inoperational, possibly for periods extending to years.

Okay, here are the key words: "No help coming." That should be very concerning to all of us. There may be a reason why no help would come if there was an EMP attack on the United States, though. There seems to be people that refuse to believe it could ever happen. From the article:

State Rep. Chad Campbell, D-Phoenix, was one of 17 lawmakers who voted against the original legislation, criticizing the focus on a catastrophe that he said was a very remote possibility.

“Really, we already have a major catastrophe in the state and that’s called our schools falling apart, our roads falling apart and we should be fixing those things,” he said. “Not living in some fantasy world worrying about some unquantified attack or some disaster that’s not gonna happen.”

I suspect that this Rep. Chad Campbell, a Democrat who sounds like he's pretty progressive, would probably never understand the EMP threat, possibly just because it has been written about so extensively on wnd.com, and I do not consider that to be a "remote possibility" at all! Or, perhaps the representative, and many like him, have never bothered to read any of the multiple reports and briefings that have been produced by the EMP Commission, such as their Executive Report. Here is a snip from the Abstract of that report, found on page 5:

Several potential adversaries have or can acquire the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication.

EMP is one of a small number of threats that can hold our society at risk of catastrophic consequences. EMP will cover the wide geographic region within line of sight to the nuclear weapon. It has the capability to produce significant damage to critical infrastructures and thus to the very fabric of US society, as well as to the ability of the United States and Western nations to project influence and military power.  (Emphasis my own.)

It does, however, illustrate one major reason why nothing has been done on the federal level,  It could be related to the ignorance about the plausibility of one of our enemies having the ability to launch a nuclear weapon into space, and detonating it right above the United States.

Keeping in mind that our current President and many of the Democrats in the U.S. Senate are not pro-military, it might explain why the SHIELD Act passed in the House last year, but went nowhere in the Senate.

Well, there is one thing that We the People can do to help prevent such a catastrophic event from happening, or at least to the magnitude that could be the reality right now.  You know what that is, and you know when we can do something about it:  It is called the Midterm Election this November 2014.  We must vote out the Representatives and Senators, mostly Democrats, but even some of the progressive Republicans, too, that are keeping this country from protecting itself.  Just sayin'...

WASHINGTON – Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed legislation to require the state’s Department of Emergency and Military Affairs to prepare materials outlining what citizens need to know to deal with either a natural or man-made electromagnetic pulse event that could knock out the vulnerable electrical grid system over a wide geographical region.

The legislation, SB 1476, was introduced by Sen. David Farnsworth, R-Mesa. It includes the type and quantity of food, water and medical supplies that each person should stockpile in case an EMP occurs over the U.S.

The legislation, however, doesn’t require actual hardening of the grid within the state.

“In our lifetimes the emergencies we’ve seen have been local emergencies, and really all we have to do is be prepared enough to hang on until help arrives,” Farnsworth said at the time he introduced it last February. “With an EMP, there’s no help coming.”

Under the legislation that now is law, the Arizona Division of Emergency Management is to post on its website recommendations such as the type and amount of supplies residents should stockpile to be prepared for an EMP event.

Farnsworth’s more immediate concern was the prospect of an EMP triggered by the detonation of a high-altitude nuclear weapon. The EMP would have the effect of knocking out the vulnerable grid system and any unprotected electronics.

“My hope is that by bringing this out, we’ll start discussions and come to the realization that as a government we can’t feed all these people, but as responsible citizens we need to do our part and make individual preparations,” he said at the time he introduced the legislation.

A co-sponsor of the legislation, Don Shooter, R-Yuma, had criticized the federal government for not taking a similar public education program.

Iran says warships headed close to US borders (AP)

IRNA quoted Haddad as saying the fleet is approaching U.S. maritime borders for the first time. The Islamic Republic considers the move as a response to U.S. naval deployments near its own coastlines. The U.S. Navy's 5th fleet is based in Bahrain, just across the Persian Gulf.

This may not be a story at all, but I give Politicollision huge kudos for providing this good intel that somehow slipped through government control of the mainstream media. On Politicollision, it was mentioned that once "their patrols become routine, will an E.M.P. attack from Iran follow..." That is not a stretch. In various EMP attack scenarios that I've come across, either Iran or North Korea (or both) would launch missiles from ships just off the East or West coasts (or both) that would carry a nuclear payload meant to be detonated high enough in the atmosphere over America, that an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) would knock out our power grid, along with anything with computer chips, including our cell phones, vehicles, microwave ovens...

And now, Iranian naval vessels are going to be near our Eastern coastline? Will our mainstream press ask the administration for information regarding possible defensive actions? I highly doubt another word about it will ever be mentioned in any of the MSM.  That will not be because the U.S. military does not want to give away any secrets about our military response.  Heck no! The lack of further stories about this situation will be more from the seemingly typical apathy by BOTH the MSM press and the Obama administration.

That's just my opinion, but I think the story should jump out at you. In the various scenarios I think most of us have heard about, the possibility of an EMP weapon being launched that could reach the North American continent seemed to be dependent on a shorter range than Iran or North Korea were capable of doing from their homelands.

Regardless if the naval vessels from Iran mentioned in this story are capable of launching high altitude rockets or not, it could always be just a test run to see how close their vessels could get to us without a military response. And, well, that is a test on Obama's resolve to keep us safe. Just sayin'...

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iranian warships dispatched to the Atlantic Ocean will travel close to U.S. maritime borders for the first time, a senior Iranian naval commander said Saturday.

The commander of Iran's Northern Navy Fleet, Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad, said the vessels have already entered the Atlantic Ocean via waters near South Africa, the official IRNA news agency reported.

China reveals 'ace' against U.S. military ~ by F. Michael Maloof

As WND previously has reported, China is giving a priority to developing EMP weapons that could be used against U.S. aircraft carriers, which increasingly are arriving in the South and East China Seas as part of the new U.S. “pivot” policy toward Asia.

That policy is to challenge China’s claims over all of the East and South China Seas and the increasing assertiveness by Beijing, which is trying to gain exclusive control over vital minerals and energy in the region.

When you see this column posted here today, please do not conclude that it is is just more fear-mongering paranoia. This is not posted here because of a paranoid threat of World War III starting tomorrow. There is much more to this column than the reporting on a military threat from China that you'll learn on close scrutiny.

During previous American Presidential administrations, it is doubtful that China would not only attempt an attack on American forces defending Taiwan, they wouldn't have rattled sabers about it, either, at least not in such a threatening manner. As explained in this column, "the Chinese military has calculated that the U.S. military is too fragmented and, coupled with the downturn in the economy, would be less likely to come to Taiwan’s assistance, forcing Taiwan to defend itself." Does that not say what China thinks of the resolve of our current President? No, Obama is not going to go down in history as our "peace-through-strength" President, is he. If anything, I think it is just the opposite. My conclusion, which I came to a long time ago, as in when Obama took office, is reinforced by this kind of information.

Unless what the Chinese allegedly said was totally fabricated, we should be wondering about the strategy of military cuts, and if that is leaving us vulnerable. I'm just sayin'...

WASHINGTON – Members of the Chinese military are looking to use an electromagnetic pulse as part of a “one-two punch” to knock out – literally within seconds – all defensive electronics not only on Taiwan but also on U.S. warships that could defend the island.

This revelation comes in an article by Lou Xiaoqing who says the People’s Liberation Army sees an EMP weapon as the primary means of incapacitating Taiwan and disabling American defenders nearby.

Given that such a strategy was made public in an article entitled “Electromagnetic pulse bombs are Chinese ace,” it is seen as reflecting the official Chinese government position.

Xaoqing said that if the Chinese were to use a high-altitude nuclear device which would create the destructive EMP impact on Taiwan’s electronics, it would be exploded at an attitude of 18 miles to avoid damaging civilian and military equipment on the Chinese mainland, which might happen if the bomb exploded at a higher altitude.

“China is attracted to the fight against the U.S. military after the effective range, using them as a means of surprise attack or an intimidation factor,” Xaoqing said. “The United States will abandon the use of aircraft carrier battle groups to defend Taiwan.”

Xaoqing said that the Chinese military has calculated that the U.S. military is too fragmented and, coupled with the downturn in the economy, would be less likely to come to Taiwan’s assistance, forcing Taiwan to defend itself.

The untold reason Iran wants the bomb

“Let’s not forget that earlier this year North Korea, which has the bomb and, in fact, we assess they probably have what are called super EMP nuclear weapons, which is a nuclear weapon specifically designed to make the EMP effect. That’s why all three of their nuclear tests have been so low yield. They’re designed to produce gamma rays, not a big explosion. It’s the gamma rays that make the EMP effect,” Pry told WND. “North Korea, in April, threatened to destroy the United States. The evidence is right there in the headlines if people would only pay attention to them.”

Iran would love to knock out the United States, if only to make an attack on Israel more feasible. The greatest defender of Israel has been the United States, though with the current occupant of the White House, it's difficult to know if that would still be true if Israel were under attack.

Iran is surely our enemy, and one that would be highly motivated to eliminate the United States, if not from existence, at least from our Middle East presence. An EMP over the United States would set the country back into the early 19th century, some believe. And there is also the issue of North Korea, who already possesses nuclear weapons.

However, the good news is that on state levels, the electrical grid is becoming more hardened against EMP, says Dr. Pry. But then, there are still the other problems when computers, phones, and cars don't work. And our enemies still know that an EMP nuke can still destroy America. Just sayin'...

The most devastating threat is posed by an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, and a former member of the congressional EMP commission says both the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs are focused on taking out our nation’s power grids.

Senate fumbles EMP protection

There is really very little I need to say about this column, except that you probably had not heard about this in the lamestream news. However, WorldNetDaily DID cover the story in an article written by Bob Unruh on August 7, 2010, "Senate dumps strategy to prevent EMP damage".

So that you know what kind of damage EMP can do, I have included the video below. Apparently, though, some U.S. Senators don't seem to have watched the video. I am not sure they even have a clue about EMP. Or, maybe it was because they wanted their own plan, S. 1462, which promotes "clean energy." Oh, brother... Can you believe that the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee thought that was more important than spending a mere $100 million to "protect the national electric grid from 'all hazards' – including EMP from geomagnetic storms, nuclear EMP from terrorists or rogue states, cyber threats, sabotage and natural disasters? Do ya think? Just sayin'...

But the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee chose to ignore the EMP Commission, the National Academy of Sciences and the Department of Energy. Every member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee received a personal appeal from the EMP Commission and other prominent experts to pass H.R. 5026 with its provisions for protecting against EMP and "all hazards" intact – but those appeals were ignored.

H.R. 5026 may yet be saved when the Senate and House go into conference.

Perhaps in this election year the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee would heed a demand from the American people to restore the original H.R. 5026.

The Earth dodged a bullet from the sun the week of Aug. 2, a bullet in the shape of a solar flare that could have had catastrophic consequences for the existence of our modern civilization – a threat that was barely noted in the press.

On Aug. 1, NASA reported that satellites detected a coronal mass ejection, or CME, "heading in the Earth's direction." According to NASA, CMEs "are large clouds of charged particles that are ejected from the sun. … They expand away from the sun at speeds as high as a million miles an hour. A CME can make the 93-million-mile journey to Earth in just three to four days. … When a coronal mass ejection reaches Earth, it interacts with our planet's magnetic field, potentially creating a geomagnetic storm."

On the same day, the federal government issued a warning that an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, from a gathering solar storm might damage the electric grid in the United States. The Space Weather Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned, "There is a 10 percent chance that this CME will result in a severe geomagnetic storm."

The EMP from a severe solar geomagnetic storm can have disastrous consequences. A severe geomagnetic storm in 1989 collapsed the electric grid in Quebec, destroyed a transformer in a nuclear plant in New Jersey, caused $2 billion in damage and left 5 million people living in the dark.

A "great" geomagnetic storm, a rare but inevitable phenomenon, could have truly catastrophic consequences that would imperil the existence of modern civilization. In 2004 and 2008, the congressionally mandated EMP Commission warned that every hundred years or so an exceptionally large solar flare will generate a "great" geomagnetic storm. The EMP from such a storm would collapse the national electric grid and the critical infrastructures – transportation, communications, banking and finance, food and water – that sustain modern civilization and the lives of 310 million Americans.

The last "great" geomagnetic storm was in 1859, called the Carrington event. Modern civilization, so dependent upon electronic systems, has not yet experienced a "great" geomagnetic storm. Many scientists think we are overdue. Some scientists believe that, as we approach the solar maximum over the next two years, since the solar maximum brings increased solar flare activity, the possibility of a "great" geomagnetic storm will also increase.

In 2008, the National Academy of Sciences produced a report for NASA that confirmed the EMP Commission's warning that a "great" geomagnetic storm could have catastrophic consequences for modern civilization. According to the NAS report, if the 1859 Carrington event happened today, it could destroy nationwide the electric grid, collapse the critical infrastructures and take 4-10 years to recover – if recovery is possible at all. In June 2010, the Department of Energy and North American Electric Reliability Corporation released a joint report that, again, confirmed the EMP Commission's warning about the catastrophic threat from a "great" geomagnetic storm.

Fortunately, Earth dodged the bullet from the sun. Fortunately, NOAA's estimated 10 percent chance of a severe geomagnetic storm did not materialize – this time. We may not be so lucky next time.

So it is incomprehensible why the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Aug. 5 – just days after NOAA warned about the possibility of a severe geomagnetic storm actually striking our planet – would gut H.R. 5026, "The Grid Reliability and Infrastructure Defense Act," that is designed to protect the United States from the effects of a geomagnetic storm. H.R. 5026 would protect the national electric grid from "all hazards" – including EMP from geomagnetic storms, nuclear EMP from terrorists or rogue states, cyber threats, sabotage and natural disasters. H.R. 5026 embodied the recommendations of the EMP Commission, the National Academy of Sciences and the Department of Energy.

EMP attack: Overlooked catastrophe - By Hal Lindsey

Hal's article about the EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) weapon, which is created by detonating a nuclear device very high in the atmosphere, is somewhat sketchy about what that weapon can do. Basically, when the weapon is detonated, the pulse of the electromagnetic waves are capable of literally frying any type of unshielded electrical circuit, which includes computer chips - which are now found in vehicles, appliances, civilian or military aircraft, military weapons, and satellites. The area of the affects would be very wide spread. The altitude of the device when detonated will determine the extent of the area affected and carnage below. And this is why the last paragraph of his column makes a lot of sense:

I never thought I would say this, but just maybe this is the reason that in chapter 38 of Ezekiel he predicts that the armies that invade Israel in the last days are all riding horses. Could it be that Ezekiel's prophecy is more literal than any of us dared to believe?

The following part of the column also deserves a minor correction, just to help clarify it:

In an article I wrote for WorldNetDaily in July 2007, I noted a 1998 Iranian missile test that "failed, detonating some 40 seconds after launch after reaching an altitude of 180 miles. This is the approximate ideal altitude to detonate a nuclear warhead for an EMP attack on a country."
