My outrage is not about the rightness or wrongness of Ms. Williams-Bolar's actions. My outrage is with the inflexibility of the educational brown shirts that permit the existence of those festering hellholes laughably called schools. My outrage is with the helplessness of poor parents who are punished for going to any lengths to protect their children from the academic famine of these prisons.

Look, if we're going to continue federal funding of public education (putting aside the question of whether it's even constitutional), it is long past time to make changes such as John Stossel outlines in his book "Myths, Lies, and Downright Stupidity." Why the hell aren't we attaching funding to the child rather than to the school district? That way parents are free to place their children wherever they choose, and by doing so schools will be forced to compete for a child's tax dollars. Literally in one simple stroke, the vast majority of educational issues in this country would be solved by allowing competition between school districts for students' funding.

I had not heard about this case until Patrice Lewis wrote about it in her column. Like Patrice, I am outraged about it for the same reasons she tells you here. While Kelley may have broken the law, where is the justice in forcing her to send her two daughters to the "hellhole" that they claim is school?

While I generally try to avoid writing about specific news cases (because I'm not an investigative journalist), once in awhile a story hits the headlines that is so heinous I can't help but address it. If I'm misunderstanding any particulars of this situation, please forgive me; but the point of this commentary is much broader than this one incident.

KELLEY WILLIAMS-BOLAR

Doubtless you've heard about the single mother in Ohio named Kelley Williams-Bolar who received a felony conviction for lying about her residency to get her teenage daughters into a better school district. A felony conviction. This is the level of seriousness normally applied to such offenses as attempted murder, serious drug dealing and bank robbery. The mother has no previous criminal convictions and works as a special-ed teaching assistant while going to school to get her teaching certificate. Judge Patricia Cosgrove – who admitted she wanted to make an example of Ms. Williams-Bolar – stated, "I felt that some punishment or deterrent was needed for other individuals who might think to defraud the various school districts." Ms. Williams-Bolar served 10 days in jail and was told she would serve her full sentence of five years if caught again.

Yes, let's cruelly punish those people whose children are trapped in festering hellholes and who will do anything – even break the law – to get them a better education.

Here are the details as ABC News reported them. After her home was broken into, Ms. Williams-Bolar (a low-income single mom) decided she wanted her daughters to stop attending the local schools and instead attend schools in the nearby highly-ranked Copley-Fairlawn district. Her father resides in that district, so she used his address to register her girls.

For four years she got away with it until the school district's private investigator (cha-ching!) shot video showing Williams-Bolar driving her children into the neighboring district. School officials said she was cheating because her daughters received a quality education without paying taxes to fund it. "Those dollars need to stay home with our students," school district officials said.

So let me get this straight. Ms. William-Bolar's 64-year-old father presumably has no minor children attending the local schools, but 53 percent of his property taxes are applied toward those schools even though he receives no personal benefits. Yet the district won't allow him to use those tax dollars for his granddaughters. Huh?

The mom admitted she did it to keep her children safe. I'm going to take a leap of logic here and assume that the Akron schools are dangerous enough that Ms. Williams-Bolar feared for her daughters' physical safety, not to mention their academic futures. Take a gander at this article and review the statistics for poverty in each school district. No one in their right mind would prefer the Akron schools over the Copley-Fairlawn School District. Girls have been attacked, mugged and raped in inner-city schools all over the country. Can I blame the mother if she wanted something better for her daughters? Seems to me her most serious crimes are poverty and desperation.

Today's mollycoddled generation ~ By Eric Rush

Erik discusses the fact that "most progressives believe that those who seek military careers are either pathologically violent morons or losers who essentially have nowhere else to go." These progressives seriously and simply do not understand why people serve their country in the military, especially when knowing they may have to make the ultimate sacrifice. Erik is able to explain it to the rest of us, but not to the mollycoddled progressives, who will probably never understand. It's because of who they are, and how they got there. Just sayin'...

Those who have little concept of what went into the founding, establishment and the preservation and safeguarding of this nation can no more consider anything other than their inconsequential, mundane perception than I can conceptualize being pregnant.

These days, there are many of this type, thanks to the press, the entertainment industry, the Department of Education and the National Education Association. They are blissfully secure in the belief that when the pipe dream pushers have eliminated the opposition, they'll retain all of their liberties, their indulgences and their stuff. As many Europeans are now discovering, the awakening will be a decidedly rude one.

On Monday, I attended some of the public Memorial Day happenings in the city where I live. I was with my family, and the experience was at once moving, uplifting and sobering. For reasons that will be obvious to some, the tributes held a deeper meaning for many of the attendees than in times past; my wife, though definitely not a girly girl, found it necessary to water her face at more than one juncture during the commemoration.

The deeper meaning, of course, stems from the fact that a lot of Americans are aware of what a precarious position our republic now occupies, and how this relates to the many thousands of men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in preserving our freedom and our liberties.

"How do you think we should feel," I asked my children later, "about a person – maybe with kids at home, like you – who loses their life in war, so that the rest of us can do the things we want to do?"

They couldn't answer right away, though not for lack of compassion or intellect. It's not an easy question for a child.

Perhaps it's not an easy question for an adult, either – or maybe just some of them. From a strictly selfish point of view (a vantage point many Americans hold these days), why would anyone with talents and abilities, dreams and desires, loved ones and a life to live, willfully forfeit his life for the common good of his countrymen – even if guaranteed that the sacrifice would be appreciated and honored?

Based on the sentiments to which I've been exposed over the years, it's probably safe to say that most progressives believe that those who seek military careers are either pathologically violent morons or losers who essentially have nowhere else to go. Some even circuitously convey the notion that those who have been willing to lay down their lives for the rest of us were stupid to do so – suckers, you might say. Like many left-leaning Americans (particularly those in power), their conviction is that the military is a cheap utility for actualizing the grand designs of those with real vision – like themselves – and that military personnel are wholly expendable.

The truth is no doubt incomprehensible to those who believe as outlined above. While a wide variety of reasons exist as to why Americans pursue military careers (enlisted and otherwise), the fact is that, outside of dedicatedly liberal enclaves, there remains a certain distinction that is conferred upon those who elect to serve their country. As an aside, I also believe it is a testimony to American exceptionalism that ours continues to be the best military in the world, particularly given the whole "pathologically violent morons and losers" thing.

The consensus appears to be that very few of our service men and women have hidden agendas connected to their service (other than perhaps education and learning a trade or other skill); most believe that they are doing the right thing. This phenomenon would fall into the realm of honor, something that is, among many values, antithetical to the self-seeking narcissism that has become so well-established in many demographics.

Public schoolers: How's that indoctrination workin' out? ~ By Patrice Lewis

After reading what Patrice has to say in her column, would you really send your kids to a public school? And we can't even blame Obama for the sorry shape our public schools are in, because this started many decades ago, as you will learn here. However, I do kind of wonder if we can blame the public schools for Obama! Just sayin'...

Of course not every teacher agrees with the radical left-wing garbage pushed in schools. Most teachers enter the profession with a sincere love of children and a desire to shape their futures for the good. But their often mandatory involvement with teachers' unions and government mandates wipes away their innocent and naïve interest, leaving behind jaded, bitter and disillusioned people who once hoped to shape our children with great care.

Homeschool your kids, folks. It's the only way to save them.

I recently did something I haven't done in decades: I re-read the Laura Ingalls Wilder series (the Little House books). The contrast between the schools of Laura's time (late 1800s) and the schools of today is staggering. Utterly incomprehensible.

To illustrate, consider some recent headlines:

• Obama czar's "homo-genda" proposed for U.S. schools; Congressional legislation called "a sexual revolutionary's dream"

• Look what they're erasing from U.S. history! American heroes could get swapped for hip-hop culture in textbooks

• Survey asks students when they lost virginity; Results in newspaper show classes counseled "why not" be sexually active

• Schools' assignment: Squelch family values; State lawmakers urge "meaningful" counseling for wrong attitudes

• Liberal intolerance alive and well in moronic teacher from Oregon; Oregon teacher panel probes educator determined to "demolish" tea party

• Bill would require sex education starting in kindergarten

• Memo to public schools: Stop pushing sex! Group demands California implement programs promoting abstinence

Can you imagine these headlines happening during Laura's time?

If you read the sobering history of public schools, it becomes painfully clear that their purpose is not (necessarily) education; it's social change. "The public schools movement began in the 1830s, led by Horace Mann," notes George L. O'Brien in "Government Schools in Crisis." "Supposedly, the goal was to ensure that every child would have access to an education. However, from the beginning there was another agenda, and that was to control what was being taught so as to create so-called model citizens. Public schools meant taking control of education from the parents and placing it in the hands of social engineers and the government."

The early successes of these social-engineering experiments were limited because most school districts were independent and under the power of a local school board (meaning parents). But then the "unified school" movement came along at the turn of the century, which destroyed the system of local control. After World War II, educational jurisdiction was transferred to state governments. Things spiraled down even faster under President Carter, who created the U.S. Department of Education.

"Once the parents lost control of the schools," laments Mr. O'Brien, "the schools quickly became laboratories for social-engineering experiments. … The central struggle, of course, is money. As long as the government schools take so much money from parents in taxes, it is hard for parents to afford to send their children to non-government schools. Attempts to change this through tax credits and vouchers have resulted in vicious counter-attacks from the NEA among others."

Since schools are the mandatory gathering place of our society's future, it's the natural laboratory for any agenda – anything at all – to be forced upon our children. Since teachers' unions are extremely left-wing, it's the left-wing propaganda that gets pushed. Anything green, anything abortionist, anything feminist, anything homosexual, anything victimized, anything revisionist – it's all there, shoved down our children's gullets.

And since the liberal education machine is obsessed with sex – and make no mistake, liberals as a whole are obsessed with sex – schools are unwilling to comprehend, much less encourage, family values. Therefore, children become corrupted.

Which is why we now have sex education in kindergarten. Can you imagine this happening during Laura's time?

It's to the point where all the "agenda-izing" has pushed out academics. Who has time for science, history, math, English, etc.? We've got graduates who can't even find the United States on a world map. No wonder we're unable to compete with Korea or Turkey on international math scores.

It also means we now have government thugs whose job it is to catch desperate parents who lie and claim their children are living in a better district (so the kids have a chance at a higher quality education) in order to force those children back to dangerous inner-city schools. "I was actually crying," said a grandmother, "and all I'm wanting to do is just to have my grandchild have a better education. … Why can't they just let parents to get in the school of their choice?"

Because, in the words of John Stossel, the government monopoly thinks it knows best.

As if this isn't bad enough, we hear from a furious mother in Wyoming – Wyoming of all places! – on the Rush Limbaugh show that her high-school son was told by his government teacher, "The old people just need to shut up and go along with what needs to be done for this country. … This country will be better off when the old people are gone."
