New York Post columnist slammed city shutdown in blistering op-ed ~ Fox News Video
From the video description on youtube.com:
Yes, I snuck in that clip from Dan Bongino Show Clips. (It's a nice little tool for bloggers like me!) The above show clip came from Episode 1255 of the Dan Bongino Show, which I of course posted a blog about a couple days ago.
Well, I think you will have no confusion about where I stand on this issue. I think most of us figured that to keep us safe, we'd just have to lockdown, shelter-in-place, for maybe a month to 6 weeks. I don't think anyone of us really thought that the lockdown would be, "The New Normal" (a term I absolutely despise!!) I am so glad that David Marcus got his commentary on the front page of the New York Post. I am glad that Tucker Carlson is talking about it. I am glad that I saw the fantastic commentary on the Dan Bongino Show a few days ago (see above).
Yes, there are acceptable practices right now to keep people safe: Those most vulnerable, especially those in nursing homes. Of course, Governor Andrew Cuomo completely screwed that up in his state of New York. Meanwhile, I am prevented from going to the nursing home to give my 100 year old dad a hug he needs and deserves. Well, I live in Iowa, and Gov. Kim Reynolds is obviously doing things much better that Gov. Cuomo. That I can tell you from my first hand experience. My dad is still alive!
Now, back to Tucker's segment with David Marcus. It just adds the fuel to the fire, that people really want these lockdowns ended, before cities like New York go down the tube. And before a great country like the United States ends up in the dustbins of history.
I know that most of us believe that President Donald Trump will lead America back to greatness. But every day that is delayed just adds more layers of disaster, and eats away at that crust over the volcano.
New York Post columnist David Marcus called out the risks of keeping New York City locked-down.Before I tell you more about the Tucker Carlson clip with David Marcus and his commentary in the New York Post, I want to show you what Dan Bongino had to say about the story:

America Together: Returning to Work Town Hall with President Trump ~ Parts 1 and 2 ~ Fox News Videos
Well, you wonder, why was it so long before I could put this post together with the "Returning to Work Town Hall with President Trump," which was aired a week ago? It truly was a very busy news week. I concentrated on Dan Bongino's episodes regarding Gen. Flynn, which really did consume most of my time. I kept this one on the backburner until I finally had the time to watch both parts.
It is probably safe to say now, people want to get back to work! Enough is enough! This may actually be a better time for me to publish this Town Hall now, rather than a week ago. We've now had a chance to see the challenges that the lack of employment is putting on this country, thanks to the acts of courage of various entrepreneurs that just wanted to be able to put food on the table, and not lose everything during the Wuhan Virus Shutdown of 2020. Two people were arrested for doing that: Kelley Luther and Jax Myers. We must remember to thank them when the various States start opening for business. I think that their stories showed the desperation of the American people, wanting to get back to the "old normal." The "new normal" really isn't working out so well.
I think that President Trump is right. But, perhaps you will see both videos below, and come to a different conclusion. At least now, you can get first hand information right from the President. As Fox News says, "Here's the news, fair and balanced, and then you decide."

We Have the Evidence, The Coverup Continues ~ Ep. 1243 ~ The Dan Bongino Show®
From the Dan Bongino Show's description of this episode on youtube.com/Bongino or in his Show Notes:
But, now this, with the Wuhan Coronavirus Shutdown of the U.S. Economy, it is ACTUALLY state governments that have done it to the small businesses, such as the Apex Tattoo Factory, in Apex, North Carolina, owned by "Jax" Myers and his family. A true ma and pa shop. And yes, it was shut down because of the Wuhan Coronavirus pandemic, and perhaps an over-zealous policy by the State, and law enforcement officials. So, Jax Myers decides to go and open his doors, perhaps as a protest. Well, no question that it was a protest, but it was also so that he could provide for his family, and pay his bills. His arrest was video recorded, and a viral story came from it.
I know that this wasn't the only thing that Dan covers in the show today. Believe me, the rest of it is great, as always, especially the new information regarding the General Mike Flynn case, but I really wanted to focus on the part about the government-mandated closures of the small businesses, because I know of a lot of people that are in a bad position because of it. Our future and our freedom are at stake. I'm afraid that we are approaching the tipping point, which is when we get to the edge of the cliff. If small businesses end, you can say, "Hello, Socialism." And, then, goodbye Free Enterprise.
I have no answer, other than to keep voicing our opinions. It is the only option, other than saying, "I will not comply." You will see and hear what happened to Jax when he went to that option.
Now, go watch the show.
SHOW NOTES for Episode 1243
In this episode, I address the disturbing effects of the continued economic lockdowns and I interview a business owner who was pulled out of his business in handcuffs for trying to work. I also discuss explosive developments in the General Mike Flynn case. Finally, I address the controversy brewing over the origins of the Wuhan Virus.Folks, really, listen to me. Our Freedom IS at stake. Yes, it truly is. Small business is the backbone of our national economy in the United States. Small business owners take the risk that they could fail, but they open their businesses anyway, and do their best. There are always going to be those risks, but in most cases, it could be the economy, or possibly their own mismanagement that delay success, or lead to closure.
Don’t Let the Democrats Get Away With This ~ Ep. 1232 ~ The Dan Bongino Show®
From the Dan Bongino Show's description of this episode on youtube.com/Bongino or in his Show Notes:
And there may be something I had not really contemplated, that the radical left Demonicrats also want to make their base even angrier with the Conservative media outlets; and worse yet, to smear the "deplorable" patriots that support the President. That is almost always part of their campaign. They want to say the President and the Conservative media, like Fox News, or Dan Bongino, are going to cause rioting in the streets. And, the Demonicrats want us to all look like buffoons' for not taking the Wuhan Virus outbreak seriously. Dan was on Fox & Friends with Steve, Ainsley and Brian, early this (Monday) morning. You can see that segment here. It all seems to come together now.
Folks, the next part of this episode is dedicated to explaining some of the latest revelations in the Spygate saga. I'm not even going to try to describe this as something that I can completely grasp. For sure, I'm learning about it as I watch this show, but I definitely wouldn't describe my personal experience as any kind of expertise. However, maybe I can say that Dan Bongino is giving me enough information to know that what happened to President Trump in his first term was a tragedy. No, not anything he did, but what the leftist politicians tried to do to him, to diminish his ability to run the country... even though he did very well, considering all of that! But, trust me, the more you watch the Dan Bongino Show, the more you will understand how viscous and treasonous the efforts have been.
And now, because they couldn't do away with President Trump, not even the hard way, the Left is coming after us. And that is why I think it is the first part of this video that is so important. I leave that with you to ponder on.
Please see Dan's Show Notes for his News Picks!
In this episode, I address the disturbing reasons that the radical left wants to continue the destructive economic shutdowns. I also address Nancy Pelosi's troubling appearance on Fox News this weekend. Finally, I address explosive new information on the Spygate case.I don't know about you, but I am pretty sure I've been aware of what the Demonicrats have been doing to keep the shutdown going, and was pretty sure of the reasons and motivation. Of course, in the first segment of this episode, Dan reassured me that my thoughts are on the money. I've been aware of their plans, but Dan provided me with plenty of "receipts" to support my analysis. You won't need a microscope, not even a magnifying glass, to be able to drill down to see their obvious motivation, which is to hurt President Trump's chance of reelection as much as possible.

Ingraham: What is the new normal? ~ Fox News Video
From the video description:
But more importantly, we do have to look at the total impact on our economy. Laura is asking a very good question toward the end of this segment on the Angle. What will be the new normal when this is over? Is it going to be something like what Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) suggests?
This video goes along very well with a very good Dan Bongino Show that I blogged on earlier today. You may want to see that even before you watch this, if you haven't already. If you haven't noticed, it may be time to start thinking about us getting back to work, and to life, already. Really. Just sayin'...
If it means abandoning the life we loved before coronavirus or using this the crisis as a vehicle for advancing a left-wing, freedom-killing agenda, count us out. This is a very important segment on the Ingraham Angle on April 1, 2020. She discusses possible cures and treatments for the Coronavirus, along with getting actual infection rates, and accurate information is needed. Now!

We Need an Immediate Exit Strategy ~ Ep. 1217 ~ The Dan Bongino Show®
From the Bongino Show's description of this episode on youtube.com/Bongino or in his show notes:
So, in this episode, one of the major subjects that I've had on my mind, is, how are we going to get out of this mess? I trust the President's judgment on how and when we'll get back on track. No, if I was listening to Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and their Media shills (their allies, like Roswell Rachel), I would be having a panic attack, and start believing their claims that the end is near. But, I instead feel very good about the Trump administration's handling of the Coronavirus pandemic. And Dan Bongino lays out an excellent strategy for how we get out of this funk.
I highly recommend checking out the News Picks for this episode, that can be found here.
In this episode, I address the brewing plot by Nancy Pelosi to attack the Trump administration in the middle of a crisis. I also address the exit strategy from this economic shutdown that must be implemented immediately. Finally, I address the latest Moscow Maddow meltdown.I don't know quite how Dan Bongino does it. He can pack so much information into one show, it's like he's super-human (that could explain it!). The incredible amount of work that must take is mind boggling to me. All of the research it takes, and following media, and seeing what various politicians or media people are doing, it is beyond my explanation. And that is my point. It is why I present The Dan Bongino Show on this blog. It is because many accolades are well deserved. And keep in mind, he is always working on his books while doing this show. It's amazing. Okay, well, enough of my boot-licking, but I really couldn't help myself.

Stepping on the gas stimulus ~ By Terry Keenan
Yes, Americans are happy gas prices are down, but that’s not enough to counter the malaise they are feeling in other parts of their wallets. It is also a bad forward indicator of economic strength in 2015.
![]() |
| May 16, 1961 – October 23, 2014 |
But there is something that was just a bit surreal for me regarding this column. The night before I found this column, I had been at a social gathering. Somebody said that it was just another political trick to lower gas prices right before this election. That was when I replied, "No, you better worry about a sharp decline in oil prices, because that is only going to happen when the demand for energy declines. And why would that happen? Think about it; the global economy is going into a slump." The people that I told that to, being mostly conservatives like me, nodded their heads in solemn agreement.
As Terry wrote, "It is also a bad forward indicator of economic strength in 2015." So, before reading this column by Terry, I was already on the same page. I know that it would seem that lower fuel costs will give Americans more available finances, but it may not work out that way. With lower energy prices, won't that also mean that the newly revived energy industry in America will also see lower revenues from their products?
And now for a reminder from Niel Cavuto just what Terry meant to us viewers.
RIP, Terry. Just sayin'...

From nypost.com
Put this in the category of “be careful what you wish for” — certainly on this, the 27th anniversary of the 1987 stock market crash.
Oil, and with it, the price of gasoline, has plummeted about 10 percent over the past 10 days. According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of gas is hovering just above $3.15 a gallon, with prices below $3 in many parts of the nation.
Here in New York City, prices are at levels not seen since 2011.
All this, as much of the Middle East is literally in flames.
Citigroup put out a report on Friday that estimates the drop in gas prices to multiyear lows will add $1.1 trillion to the US economy — a “stimulus package” on steroids that would best the TARP bailout of October 2008.
Obviously, the drop in gas prices is great for drivers and typically a boon for the US retail economy. The less money you spend on gas, the more you can spend on other items.
But not so fast.

Connecting the dots to anarchy ~ By Patrice Lewis
What worries me about this attitude is that when food shortages hit on a long-term basis or when unemployment spikes beyond the government's ability to provide, hungry folks will listen to anyone who claims to have the ability to solve their problems and blame others for causing the hunger.
If money is worthless and food is hard to come by, how long before we react with fear and anger? How long before we're willing to blame anyone and anything? How long before some charismatic leader assures us that he can solve all our problems? How long before violence erupts?
Can't happen here? Don't fool yourself. Hunger has no nationality. It doesn't belong to any skin color, language or culture. Buy food now – because when the pantry is truly empty, it's too late.
Patrice points out the fact that various events could result in a crisis right here in America. Yes, it can happen right here. Agricultural failures, economic crisis, or even a fuel shortage could change things in a short amount of time. Once again, as she has written before, Patrice stresses the point that we need to be prepared.
Connecting the dots to anarchy

Last year here in north Idaho, my garden failed. Miserably.
Not from lack of trying. But after having the "winter of no winter" (very little snow), we also had the "summer of no summer." Well into the third week of June, the cold and rainy conditions made it nearly impossible for vegetables to grow.
It was a harsh lesson in some ways. Right now a garden's failure is merely an inconvenience. But in times past, a garden's failure could be catastrophic. After all, the French Revolution was triggered in large part because people were starving. Some say the recent riots in Egypt were fueled by surging wheat prices.
Keep this in mind for a moment as we review some recent headlines:
- A leading U.K. scientist warned about a threat of food riots around the world unless research into increasing crop yields is stepped up.
- A severe drought is threatening to destroy China's wheat crop. Emergency measures to divert water for irrigation are leaving nearly 3 million people short of drinking water. "China's grain situation is critical to the rest of the world – if they are forced to go out on the market to procure adequate supplies for their population, it could send huge shock waves through the world's grain markets," said Robert S. Zeigler.
Of course it's not just food that's an issue. What about debt?
- Global food prices have hit "dangerous levels" that could contribute to political instability, push millions of people into poverty and raise the cost of groceries. The USDA predicted last week U.S. corn farmers will have 675 million bushels of corn at the end of August, before next year's harvest begins. That's just an 18-day supply.
- President Obama's budget, released Monday, was conceived as a blueprint for future spending, but it also paints the bleakest picture yet of the current fiscal year, which is on track for a record federal deficit and will see the government's overall debt surpass the size of the total U.S. economy.
- The chances of a government shutdown are on the rise.
- Silver is spiking.
- Like it or not, unemployment is at 17.3 percent, not the relatively soothing 9 percent we're being spoon-fed by the mainstream media.
- Just four years ago, our budget deficit ($161 billion in 2007) was 10 percent of what it is today ($1.65 trillion).
British columnist Andrew Simms isn't afraid to state the obvious: "This year is the 10th anniversary of the fuel protests [when protesters blockaded British oil refineries, bringing the supply of fuels to gas stations to a halt], when supermarket bosses sat with ministers and civil servants in Whitehall warning that there were just three days of food left. We were, in effect, nine meals from anarchy. Suddenly, the apocalyptic visions of novelists and filmmakers seemed less preposterous. Civilization's veneer may be much thinner than we like to think."
Are you connecting the dots yet? This is the elephant in the room that everyone refuses to see: We're not as secure in this country as the government and mainstream media would like us to believe. There are sporadic news reports about dire possibilities, but few people are willing to connect the dots on the individual level. And yet it's well-documented that America, too, has a mere three day supply of food in stores, thanks to just-in-time deliveries and the efficiency of modern-day transportation and manufacturing systems. America itself remains a mere nine meals from anarchy.

Making a virtue out of a necessity ~ By Patrice Lewis
There are few of us who have not been negatively impacted in one way or another by this Great Recession. Many have lost homes, jobs and possessions. But can our dignity be taken away? Can our blessings of friends and family be taken away? There's an old expression that says, "That which cannot be cured must be endured." How we will endure will say a lot about us.Another amazing column by Patrice Lewis! This information may help you some day, if or when there is an economic crash, so pay close attention.
The strongest metal is forged in the crucible of fire. The greatest generation was forged in the crucible of the Depression. What will an economic crash create?
I would like to think it will produce pure gold. But if so, we'd better get started refining ourselves now.

Many years ago when we lived in Oregon, our county was electrified by the news that a local person had won the lottery. Days, then weeks ticked by with the mysterious winner still unknown. Oregon residents were being called, half-jokingly, by long-distant relatives asking, "Is it you?" leaving many to distrust the motives for the call.READ FULL STORY at WorldNetDaily.com
As it turns out, the winners – an older couple of modest means with 40 years of solid marriage behind them – were making careful plans before claiming their prize. They were setting up trust funds for their children and grandchildren, putting aside a portion for charitable giving, and planning investments. Oh, and they hired a company to install a security system in their small home. Only when their plans were in place did they step forward to claim their prize.
This couple was a rare example of lottery winners who dealt with their newfound wealth with intelligence and a cool head. Their careful planning was justified. The moment they were identified, they were besieged by a storm of "friends" and "relatives" crawling out of the woodwork, asking for loans, pleading hardship, wanting favors. The winners routinely referred all supplicants to their attorney. A year after the firestorm of attention had died down, they were able to continue their quiet lives immeasurably wealthier but still stable and intact.
I know this because the local media scheduled follow-up interviews each year to see how their lives had changed. This couple was able to report with pride that their children and grandchildren were not being ruined by money, but were handling this unexpected windfall with care and maturity, unlike so many sad tales of other winners.
In other words, this couple utilized the strength of their frugal, solid foundation and strong marriage to make sure they were not ruined by wealth.
Lottery winnings appear to exaggerate whatever foundation is already in place. If lottery winners are stable and mature, they emerge from their windfall better off. If lottery winners are unstable and immature, they emerge with shattered relationships and bitter regret. The news is full of sad stories of winners who squandered their money within a year or two and were left with a broken family and few friends.
Now of course few of us will ever face the challenges (or rewards) of winning big bucks. But it seems the same type of outcomes appear in the aftermath of economic downturns as well. As the economy worsens, many of us are faced with monetary woes: missed mortgage payments, unpaid credit-card bills, phone calls from collection agencies and other complications of job loss or underemployment.

Washington is leaking oil ~ By Herman Cain
The oil light is on, and the Democrats still don't seem to have a clue.
Washington is leaking oil
As Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and others have stated, Washington still does not get it. The Democrats still do not get it. They did not hear the very loud message of the election results. Stop ignoring the people! It was a good analogy by Herman Cain to explain how you can know that you have some severe problems to deal with, but yet, your priorities have nothing to do with taking care of the problems facing this country. It seems that the Democrats are only happy when they do things to try to satisfy their leftist base. That is not good for the rest of us.

My first car as a teenager was an old car with a lot of problems, but at least it was functional. It had an oil leak, and I could not afford to get the leak fixed. It was cheaper for me to add oil occasionally to prevent the engine from totally locking up, or worse yet, catching fire.
The president, his administration and Congress are functionally leaking oil, and the American people are nervous about a total government shutdown, or worse yet, economic collapse. We are not too big to fail as some people seem to believe, and Uncle Sam does not have a "sugar daddy" to bail us out.
Leaking of classified information by WikiLeaks has compromised our national security, and has put our military warriors in and out of uniform at risk. We have yet to see definitive action by the administration to address the issue, even though we have seen and heard a lot of news stories that make us uncertain that the situation is under control.
Economic uncertainty continues to thwart economic growth while Congress and the administration continue to bicker over extending the existing tax rates. Extending all of the tax rates is the right thing to do for the economy, instead of playing class warfare once again to try to gain a political victory.
If Congress and the president do not act, then we will all see tax increases on Jan. 1, 2011. This would be a devastating blow to our economy. A sense of urgency by Washington does not seem to be a priority, as if they have the option to extend the 2010 calendar year. Thankfully, they do not.

Economic judgment day ~ By Robert Ringer
Just in case you aren't frightened enough by Robert Ringer's column, "Economic judgment day," I have added the two videos below. I am basically doing what I can to make sure that people are aware of what could face us. I say that, because as Robert points out, there is an alternative to just heading for the hills because of the coming economic storm: "Stay put, dig in your heels and do your part to spread the truth – about inflation, about entitlements, about the sanctity of liberty and about the loathsome nature of government."
The Warning Signs (I guess Glenn Beck isn't the only one sounding alarms)
Beck: The Hindenburg Omen
Yep, I think that Glenn Beck's segment, "The Hindenburg Omen," is the perfect video to sandwich between the first video about the warning signs, and Robert's column, which discusses what might happen in an economic meltdown. Glenn has it right. Maybe it is time for this nation to turn to God. And as Robert writes, "I've already made my choice. What about you?" I have. Just sayin'...

Just as communists are wrong to believe they can change human nature and "convince" people to willingly give up their freedom and property, so, too, is it a mistake for defenders of liberty to believe they can convince those who worship big government to believe in freedom.
Contrary to the "summer of recovery" blather we are being fed on a daily basis, the truth is that the economy is getting worse by the day – and the worst, by far, is yet to come. Economic judgment day may be a bit late in arriving, but it is coming. So you have only two choices: Fight or flight. I've already made my choice. What about you?

Ever since Barack Obama fooled independents into giving him the keys to the car (his metaphor), the talk about economic judgment day has increasingly intensified. But what, exactly, would have to happen to bring about a total collapse of the U.S. economy?
One path to economic judgment day is for the government to allow market forces to rule, which, because of decades of government meddling in the economy, would surely bring about a full-scale deflationary depression. Though the iPod, flat-screen-TV, eat-out-four-nights-a-week crowd doesn't want to hear about it, the truth is that a deflationary economic judgment day would be a good thing because it would cleanse the economy of artificially high wages, profligate spending and malinvestment.
In a deflationary scenario, most people, to be sure, would be much worse off, but a small percentage of folks would actually come out ahead. That's because a deflationary depression is a time when, in effect, property is returned to its rightful owners.
The second possibility for economic judgment day is runaway inflation, which I have been predicting for the past 30 years. This would almost certainly lead to social chaos and anarchy, more likely than not followed by a dictatorship. The reason runaway inflations tend to result in dictatorships is because the natives become restless when they discover that government's paper money is worthless.
Having said all this, I must admit that I sometimes feel like Wile E. Coyote. Every time I believe the government is trapped by economic reality, I hear that infamous "Beep Beep" and end up scratching my head. With its high-speed printing presses, its ability to borrow virtually unlimited sums of money and a monopoly on the use of force, government always seems to escape the consequences of its actions and lives to see another day. But unless someone figures out how to make gold out of paper money real soon, the inevitable is already written in stone.
It is American entrepreneurs who have held up the U.S. economy for all these years by doing what they have always done best: create wealth. It is they, not government, who create jobs and increase living standards. But if BHO continues to press the welfare pedal to the floor – which he clearly has every intention of doing – an inflationary ending is virtually assured.
Remember, the continued onslaught of valueless paper money disrupts the market and causes confusion, apprehension and, eventually, panic. People are afraid to enter into long‑term contracts, because they have no idea what money will be worth in the future.
Businessmen decrease investments in new plants and equipment (as they are now doing), because they do not know if their real profits will be worth the risk. The latter causes shortages, which leads to even higher prices.
If inflation is not eventually curtailed, a final collapse of the economy begins when people start to guess at what future prices will be. This sets off a chain reaction where sellers increase prices even faster than the supply of money increases.
At that point, government faces its last chance to avoid a total collapse of the economy. Henry Hazlitt put it well when he said, "Every inflation must eventually be ended by government or it must 'self‑destruct.'" This self‑destruction is exactly what has happened to nation after nation throughout history.
The case most of us are familiar with is Germany's runaway inflation in 1923. Consider these figures: Between 1914 and 1923, the German government issued an additional 92.8 quintillion (92,800,000,000,000,000,000) paper marks, a 245 billionfold increase in the money supply. Prices, in turn, rose 1.38 trillionfold. Interest rates rose as high as 10,000 percent per annum on some debt instruments.
As you would guess, people eventually refused to accept paper money in exchange for goods and services. The economy collapsed and chaos and crime ensued. And waiting in the wings, preparing hysterical answers for hysterical people, was Adolf Hitler, who understood all too well that only an authoritarian police state could restore order.
Nevertheless, I'm glad the Obamessiah was able to fool the public and win out over Mush McCain. Why do I say that? Because if McCain had ended up on the throne, no matter how liberal he may have been, the Democrats and their left-wing allies in the media would have had a field day blaming the inevitable economic collapse on the evils of capitalism. (Remember, Obama has been in power going on two years and he's still blaming George Bush for everything!)

Not your 1930s Depression ~ By Patrice Lewis
Patrice has it so right in this column, it is making it difficult to expound on it. In fact, I ended up sitting on this one for several days to give me a little more time to come up with something. In fact, for a Patrice Lewis column back on May 22, 2010, I seemed to have encountered the same problem:
I usually do this little intro blurb after I've formatted the page and everything else involved. That's right, I save the best part for last (wink). But, it can also be the hardest part of the work I do in updating this blog. And sometimes, it is Patrice Lewis' columns that are the most difficult to write an intro for. Why? Because they are written so well, and I have to ask myself how anything I write here could ever compare. I really want people - as many as possible - to read what Patrice has to say. I don't want to bore anyone before they get to the column to read it for themselves. In this column, Patrice brings up a problem that many would not have thought of. The fear now is that if there is a major economic collapse, that unlike in the Great Depression of the 1930's, many people won't be willing to do what it takes, or know how, to survive. She writes:
After decades of government entitlements, many people no longer have a work ethic. My concern is if we encounter the economic depression analysts predict, it will result in societal turmoil – because far too many people haven't the slightest clue how to work, how to exchange labor for food, or how to restrain their most vicious and animalistic desires in order to keep civilization civil. After reading this column, many of you may get the same thought I did. "Keep your powder dry, folks." Just sayin'...
Our country can survive an economic depression. We've done it before and we can do it again. It won't be easy, but we can do it.
But I fear we cannot survive an economic depression when it's coupled with an unwillingness to embrace a work ethic, independence, civility and religious foundation. Once the artificial props of government entitlements are removed, it will be every man for himself. The results may be anarchy and chaos. And it will give the government a clear opportunity to take advantage of the "crisis" and put in place a government such as we could never imagine.

The news headlines have been screaming lately:If you're self-employed like we are, headlines like these make us nervous. So we've gotten caught up in the "preparedness" movement purely out of anxiety.
You see, if our country is heading toward a 1930s-style depression or worse, I fear it won't be "just" an economic depression. We are missing some key elements that were present during the 1930s that will make that decade-long economic disaster a relative walk in the park compared to today.
Those key factors are a work ethic, independence, civility and a religious foundation.
Remember the old stories of how someone would knock at your grandmother's back door and offer to split some firewood in exchange for a meal? Does anyone honestly think hungry people will do this any more? We're so used to entitlements that the idea of lowering ourselves to exchange labor for food is outrageous. No, today a person who is hard up on their luck and not getting a government handout is much more likely to kick in the back door, tie grandma up, pistol whip her (or worse) and clean the house of any usable items before departing for the next victim. In their minds this is because grandma has no "right" to have food when they don't.
The elders in our society often recall with fondness some of the good elements that came out of the horrible Great Depression. They remember the sense of community that sprang up, born of common hardships. They remember how hard the indigent would work to maintain their dignity and not sink to accepting charitable handouts without offering something else in exchange (such as splitting firewood).
But no more.
If it weren't so tragic, it would be laughable to hear people spouting on and on about their "rights." Criminey, folks, most people wouldn't recognize a real "right" if it bit them on the butt. Rights are a gift from God. They do NOT come from the government. All those entitlements – subsidized housing, food stamps, free medical care – are not "rights."
We have the right to life. We have the right to liberty. And we have the right to the pursuit (not the achievement) of happiness. These rights derive from our Creator, not from the fools in Washington.
You do NOT have the "right" to food. It's up to you to get that for yourself or, if you can't, to look to private individuals or organizations to voluntarily provide it. You do NOT have the right to housing, medical care, transportation, unemployment checks, or anything else people bleat about when they want something but don't want to work for it.
Only when we struggle to be as independent as possible are the chains of slavery seen so clearly.
Because we have been so caught up with false "rights" for the last 50 years, we've gotten to the point where we are helpless and dependent and no longer able or willing to achieve anything on our own. And only someone pathetically caught up in a liberal mentality can argue that entitlements help people achieve independence.
This mentality has set the stage for a modern collapse to be worse than any throughout the annals of history.
Right now there are economic forces at work that are beyond our control. We can go from homeowner to homeless in the blink of an eye. It can happen to anyone, no matter how prepared or unprepared they believe themselves to be.
But a work ethic, an independent spirit and a moral foundation are entirely within our control and can be acquired just as quickly. To their ultimate loss, most people choose not to acquire them.
So if we're heading for a depression in this country, we need to brace ourselves for much, much more than financial hardship. We need to brace ourselves against millions of lawless people demanding "entitlements" they have not earned and for which they have no intention of offering anything in exchange.
What does the future hold for America? There are two possibilities – a loss of freedom, or a return of freedom. Sadly, most people don't like freedom. They want someone to rescue them if things go wrong, which means they only like the "freedom" of an extra-long chain.
We have allowed independence to slip into dependence. We have allowed a work ethic to descend into an entitlement mentality.

Don't come knocking on my door ~ By Patrice Lewis
I usually do this little intro blurb after I've formatted the page and everything else involved. That's right, I save the best part for last (wink). Today is especially that case, because I am hoping there will be many "Grasshoppers" that will read this today, and in the hope they become "Ants." (You'll understand what I'm saying after you read her column). Like Patrice says:
Today is especially that case, because I am hoping there will be many "Grasshoppers" that will read this today, and in the hope they become "Ants." (You'll understand what I'm saying after you read her column). Like Patrice says:
... yet we have thoughtless and unprepared friends, relatives and strangers – most of whom are better off financially than we are – who are doing nothing. But they will blithely come knocking at our door when times get tough and expect us to cheerfully and freely share everything. The reality is, we cannot feed them all.I can easily conclude this intro now, with my usual: Just sayin'...
Please, folks, become Ants. If you insist on remaining a Grasshopper, don't come a-knocking at our door. We may not answer, because so many have already been let in ahead of you.

On Thursday I made a severe error in judgment. I logged onto the Drudge Report, where these headlines jumped out at me:
- Stocks drop most in a year on economic reports, European debt crisis
- Roubini: Stocks to tumble another 20%, cash the safest place
- Strains accumulate
- Fed official: Europe's crisis poses risks to USA
- Confusion over regulation moves trigger sell-offs
These headlines got me worried because they coincide with a couple of entries I recently posted on my blog: "Predictions for the rest of 2010," and "More cheery news." I'll pause while you go read those items.
...
Now that you're back, can you understand why I find myself nervous about the future?
When I'm nervous, I tend to can food. In the last two days I've canned 33 pints of mixed vegetables and 14 quarts of chicken breasts.
Because, you see, I expect the bleep to hit the fan within a year, possibly less. Mother hen that I am, I want to gather my chicks close and protect them. The frustrating thing is, those of us with concerns about the economy can't help but wonder how much of it is orchestrated. Whatever the cause, things appear to be spiraling out of control. So I'm doing the only thing I can do, and that's to prepare for hard times.
Of course, most people aren't preparing. History is full of people who ignored warning signs and put their heads in the sand (and their rumps in the air). These are the folks who derive great amusement at us who prepare, smugly calling us conspiracy nuts or lunatics. Then they'll calmly inform us of their contingency plans: "Well, we'll just come live with you if things get tough."
These are the Grasshoppers of society, and I've written about them before. These are the people who still have their jobs and homes, but seem incapable or unwilling to look beyond the shallow concerns of everyday life to read the headlines or see the storm clouds gathering on the horizon.
This attitude makes Ants very, very nervous.
One woman posted on my blog: "I live on 1 acre in town, and we have 48 relatives within walking distance of our house. If only four people show up to be fed and cared for, my six-month supply is cut in half to three months. The more people who show up for help … well, just do the division! I'm trying to build my stock and some nights I don't sleep well just thinking about how quickly it could be depleted. This is not fear talking; this is wrapping my brain around reality."
This woman has tried warning her friends and family, but when she saw them "taking cruises and trips to Florida," she knew the message wasn't getting through.
Grasshoppers, every one of them. Grasshoppers are not people who are unemployed or facing eviction or dealing with medical bills. Grasshoppers are people who have jobs and are perfectly capable of preparing, but who deny that hard times could ever happen.
Whenever I address this subject in a column, there's always someone who "jokingly" announces that he'll just come live with us if the bleep hits the fan. My standard reply is, "Stand in line. There are dozens ahead of you." The honest truth of the matter is, "Why is it MY responsibility to feed YOU when you've had plenty of warning that times are going to be tough, and you've just been too stupid or stubborn to listen?"
And the trouble is, the woman with 48 relatives shares a major concern with other Ants: We love our Grasshoppers to pieces. They are our friends and family. So the question arises – how do we decide who comes to live with us and share our supplies? How many Grasshoppers can one Ant support?

19th-century Americans ~ By Patrick J. Buchanan
Pat Buchanan reminds us of how America used to be, and it is what China is becoming: An economic and eventually military superpower. How did this happen? Or, should we ask, why is this happening? Something doesn't seem right about this. Just sayin'...
The Chinese of 2010 call to mind 19th-century Americans who shoved aside Mexicans, Indians and Spanish to populate a continent, build a mighty nation, challenge the British Empire – superpower of the day – and swiftly move past her in manufacturing to become first nation on earth. Men were as awed by America then as they are by China today.
America seems a declining superpower. She cannot defend her borders, balance her budgets or win her wars. Her educational system at the primary and secondary level is a shambles. In the first decade of the century, she lost one of every three manufacturing jobs. In this second decade, she is looking at trillion-dollar deficits to 2020. The world is losing confidence in her ability to manage her surging national debt.

"Thank you, Hu Jintao, and thank you, China," said Hugo Chavez, as he announced a $20 billion loan from Beijing, to be repaid in Venezuelan oil.
The Chinese just threw Chavez a life-preserver. For Venezuela is reeling from 25 percent inflation, government-induced blackouts to cope with energy shortages and an economy that shrank by 3.3 percent in 2009.
Where did China get that $20 billion? From us. From consumers at Wal-Mart. That $20 billion is 1 percent of the $2 trillion in trade surpluses Beijing has run up with the United States over two decades.
Beijing is using its trillions of dollars in reserves, piled up from exports to America, to cut deals to lock up strategic resources for the coming struggle with the United States for hegemony in Asia and the world.
She has struck multibillion-dollar deals with Sudan, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Russia, Iran and Australia to secure a steady supply of oil, gas and vital minerals to maintain the 10 percent to 12 percent annual growth China has been racking up since Deng Xiaoping dispensed with Maoism and set his nation out on the capitalist road.
China has dozens of nuclear-power plants under construction, has completed the Three Gorges Dam – the largest power source on earth – and is tying the nation together with light rail, bullet trains and highways in infrastructure projects unlike any the world has ever seen.
Contrast what China is doing with what we are about. We have declared vast regions of our country, onshore and offshore, off-limits to drilling for oil and gas. We have not built a nuclear-power plant in 30 years or a refinery in 25 years. We have declared war on fossil fuels to save the planet from global warming.
Given the power of the environmental lobby to tie up projects in endless litigation, we could never today build our Interstate Highway System, Hoover Dam, the TVA or the Union Pacific Railroad.
Determined to take America's title as the world's first manufacturing nation, as she has taken Germany's title as the world's leading exporter, China keeps her currency undervalued and demands of those who sell to China that they also produce in China. As America's share of the world economy steadily falls, China's share has doubled. This year, China will overtake Japan as the world's second-largest economy.

Taxing Atlas ~ By Patrice Lewis
John Galt, this one's for you!
Patrice Lewis has a rant that I am sure all of us can understand about this time of the year, especially if you are in the half of the American population that DOES pay taxes!
And because of the theme of this great column, I threw in a couple related items at the bottom of this page. A video that I uploaded yesterday morning discusses just how OUT OF CONTROL the U. S. Government is. Deficits, debt, and then the ultimate crisis that is going to happen for the very reason that Patrice will mention here. People are going to just quit their businesses, end their non-profit charities, and basically, we can then ALL put out our hands for the government to take care of us. At the end of the video, there is a very special segment where somebody says, "Tick-tock, Mr. Bauer, you're running out of time..."
Well, that brings me to the final part of MY rant, in the related story: Did America already commit Obamcide? You decide.

I think you will understand the meaning of this video just by watching the last minute of the video. But, you should see the whole thing. It is the budget deficits, the national debt, and the oncoming crisis that all has to do with the unemployment problems: How we got here (deficit spending), where we are now (huge national debt), and where it will go from here (crisis) that will determine what happens in the next few months.

So in this season of filing taxes and proving how complicating our government is, we should think long and hard about the kind of hope and change that will lead to further complications by introducing yet more government rules and regulations and red tape.
Otherwise the real Atlas – that sleeping giant of middle America – may shrug, give the government the "finger" and watch the economy collapse.

The following column can officially be termed a "rant." Sometimes I just need to vent, and this is one of those times.
Taxes have been on my mind this week. That's because I finally finished our taxes on Tuesday night, in time for our appointment on Wednesday afternoon.
Taxes are a complicated business for us. We have four sources of self-employed income, and that means all sorts of fancy paperwork that needs to be filed. Thankfully, our tax preparer, Valerie, is incredibly competent at making sense out of nonsense.
But poor Valerie's business has become more complicated. "Look," she said, pulling a notebook off a shelf. "These were the tax amendments we studied from last year's continuing education class." The notebook was half an inch thick. "And here is this year's notebook." The notebook was three inches thick. I'm not exaggerating.
It's not just personal income taxes that are getting complicated (like they were ever simple, right?). All nonprofit organizations in the U.S. are suddenly being required to provide preposterous amounts of paperwork, documentation and other proof that they are, indeed, nonprofit. It's like the government is trying to bleed all the joy out of being charitable.
But the government is desperate for money, and who knows how many of those evil and secretive nonprofits are engaging in nefarious behavior to elude paying their fair share of Planned Parenthood's operating expenses? So now nonprofits are required to pony up paperwork demonstrating their worth and status.
And on and on it goes. Prove this. Document that. Take everything – employment, personal lives, charitable endeavors – and reduce it to nothing more than a dipping pot of money for an ever-increasing and ever-intrusive government, which wants nothing more than to seize control of your assets and resources in order to, um, spread the wealth.
And of course most of your wealth is not spread to individuals or groups (deserving or not), but to the government oversight of those individuals or groups. In other words, any time a government entity runs a "charitable" organization – spreading your wealth – it skims off a huge percentage for (cough) administration costs. Gotta pay all those bureaucrats, after all.
And of course there's always the Ponzi schemes of Medicare and Social Security that robs Peter to pay Paul. What's wrong with this picture?
While no previous administration was ever innocent of increasing the size of government, there's no question the pace has intensified drastically in the last decade. We are being micro-managed to death. Our driving habits, our health care, our energy usage, our lighting options … the list is endless, and endlessly humiliating. I mean honestly – we're supposed to be grown-up men and women, independent and responsible. We shouldn't have to report to Big Brother for permission to live decent ordinary lives.
Now we learn that nearly half of U.S. households escape paying federal income taxes. This means that half the people in this country are paying for the other half's share of benefits.
Unlike liberals, I don't resent the wealthy. They're the ones who create jobs. They're the ones who keep the economy going. And if they're taxed to the point where they decide it ain't worth it, what then?
And you don't have to be wealthy to reach the breaking point. At what point will small businesses simply conclude all the increasing hassle of government red tape and excessive micromanagement isn't worth it? At what point will charities conclude it's too much trouble to comply with federal interference and throw in the towel? At what point will nonprofit groups grow tired of proving themselves and decide it's not worth continuing their efforts?
See my point? The more the government complicates our lives, the more we reduce our efforts to start businesses, act charitably, do something for the public good, or simply follow our dream (pursuit of happiness, remember?). There goes the economy.
