In this episode, I address the growing tyranny of face mask mandates. These mandates treat us all as children, incapable of making responsible decisions. I also address the explosion of cancel culture and it’s growing impact on liberals too.

After seeing the great Episode 1293, it took me a little while to get to writing this blog. I got sidetracked a little. In a weird way, I think I am able to segue into this episode by mentioning something I talked about yesterday.  It is all about what American citizens do when the government mandates our shift in behavior, such as banning fireworks, and wearing face bras...umm, I mean, masks, in order to stop the spread of the Wuhan Flu.

Well, for sure, Dan was fired up today, being that Martin County in Southern Florida had voted to mandate the wearing of masks.  There are exceptions to it, but still, I think it was the fact that the County officers perceived their powers to be necessary because we dumb hicks out here just can't figure it out on our own.  It is an attack on our liberty, as I think Dan was saying.  And yes, he's totally right.  I remember when here in Iowa, they decided that business owners weren't free to decide if they would allow cigarette smoking in bars and restaurants, and many other places. I knew it would happen, too, they soon added many other locations, even outside, where smoking wouldn't be allowed.  Those mandates always seem to keep creeping more and more into our freedom.   Once we're on that slippery slope toward tyranny, it's hard to get back up the incline.  Ever notice that?

So, in the case of the Martin County mask mandate, there are ways to fight back, as Dan explains in the first segment of the show.  He can just not wear the mask, and pay the fine.  And, as he says, he can get people to run for those offices in the County government, and create some real headaches for the incumbents, such as being primaried.  Well, here in Iowa, they made it much more difficult to be rebellious against the cigarette bans.  They made it so that the business owner, such as a bar owner or employee, would be the one that would pay the fine if anyone was caught having a cigarette with their beer.  The only other option would be to have outside areas at bars and restaurants where people could drink and smoke; but then, that has a cost, too.

Don't worry, that wasn't all Dan talked about today.  The World Health Organization, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, his brother Chris Cuomo at CNN, and others, did not escape Dan's not-so-mellow scrutiny, which I enjoy seeing.  So, feel free to see this episode all the way through, our skip through it if needed for your time, but watch this one.  And by the way, I've added Bonus Video for you today, from the story about the fireworks (literally) in Los Angeles.  See you all tomorrow!

Capitalism, which drives competition, our thriving economy, and which keeps people working. In the Trump years, it is and will be the Golden Age of our prosperity, and we are just getting started!

Clinton ‘surprised’ to learn small businesses are struggling ~ By Sam Rolley

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, meanwhile, called Clinton out for expressing such surprise about the state of small businesses.

“At every turn, Hillary Clinton has supported top-down Washington-driven policies that have stacked the deck against small businesses,” Priebus said. “Hillary Clinton can’t possibly be a champion for everyday Americans when she doesn’t understand their most basic economic concerns and was ‘surprised’ to learn that small businesses are struggling.”

There is no way, if you are a small business owner, or if you even work for one, that you should ever consider voting for Hillary Clinton, let alone any other liberal Democrat, for any national, state or local government. This is really all you need to know in order to understand my position:

Not only was she "supposedly" ignorant about the fact that small businesses are struggling, she never mentions the key reasons: Too much government regulation, the tax preparation burden, employment taxes, the estate tax, and even something called "Operation Choke Point." It is actually a sarcastic twist to the story on her part, as the Left is all about taking away personal initiative to create a small business, and she is fully aware of that. Just sayin'...

In the most recent example of her extreme ignorance, Hillary Clinton said that once she “began to dig,” she was surprised to find that U.S. small businesses are struggling.

“I want to be sure we get small businesses starting and growing in America again. We have stalled out. I was very surprised to see that when I began to dig into it,” she said during a speech in New Hampshire. “Because people were telling me this as I traveled around the country the last two years, but I didn’t know what they were saying and it turns out that we are not producing as many small businesses as we use to.”

The White House has refused to say whether it agrees with Clinton that U.S. small businesses are stalled.

“We’ll take a look at the statistics and get back to you,” spokesman Josh Earnest said.

Governments don't create prosperity ~ By John Stossel

John Stossel weighs in on the "government spending creates jobs" issue. After spending trillions of dollars in order to stimulate our economy, unemployment remains high and the economy remains stagnant. One of the points that Stossel makes here is how uncertainty continues to drag down our economy. Pour all the money you can into improving the infrastructure, in other words, and nothing will change if small business - the engine of the economy - is reluctant to expand. The private sector needs to be expanding in order for our economy to prosper.

Politicians say they create jobs, but they really don't. Or rather, they rarely create productive jobs. Government has no money of its own. All it does is take resources from one group and give them to another. The pharaohs might have claimed they created work when they ordered that pyramids be built, but think how much richer (and freer) the Egyptians would have been if they'd been allowed to pursue their own interests.

It's individuals in the marketplace who create real jobs – when they have the protection of life and property under the rule of law.

Economic freedom is the key. The theory couldn't be more clear, and at this late date in human history, it shouldn't be necessary to rehearse the abundant evidence. Look at the various indexes that correlate economic freedom with economic growth. The healthiest economies are those with the most economic freedom. Unemployment is low in those places – 3 percent in Hong Kong, 2 percent in Singapore, 5 percent in Australia

Alas, the United States places ninth, behind Canada, and those countries with the least economic freedom have few real jobs and no prosperity.

Unfortunately, most politicians still don't understand – or have no incentive to understand – that economic freedom, and therefore less government, creates prosperity. Well, maybe that's changing. This year is first I've heard so many presidential candidates talk about the private sector. Indeed, one candidate, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, told me he created "not one single job. ... Government does not create jobs."

The U.S. economy is on life support. The stock market is on a roller coaster. The unemployment situation has gotten worse. The Middle East is more volatile than ever. Congress has one of the lowest approval ratings in history, while President Obama's approval rating has hit a new low.

And now, after his big "jobs speech" before a joint session of Congress last week, the president wants to spend another nearly $450 billion to turn things around, since the first stimulus of nearly $1 trillion did not work. The speech contained the same kind of ideas he proposed earlier, packaged in some different rhetoric except for two new additions.

First, he proposed to cut the payroll tax in half for both employees and employers, but he did not say for how long. Granted, it's half of what I have been proposing for months. But without major companion cuts in the top corporate and personal income tax rates, and the suspension of taxes on repatriated foreign profits, it's just another crumb from the want-to-be king's table.

Businesses are not going to rush out and start hiring people, just as they did not when the president passed the 2 percent payroll tax crumb in the first stimulus package. And businesses still do not know what the tax structure will be in 2013. That's not fuel for the economic engine, which is the business sector. It's just a few dollars in the pockets of workers and more uncertainty.

From Internet surfers to Internet serfs ~ By Phil Elmore

Five dollars isn't very much money. Yet as I whittled away at my Fiverr gigs, I realized I was expending much time and effort for a pittance. If I was willing to do that, what would those who were using Fiverr as their only source of income feel about the tasks offered?

Are we becoming a nation of webcam prostitutes and flash mobs, court jesters and glorified street mimes, who will perform stupid human tricks on command for only five bucks each? Have we been transformed from Internet surfers into Internet serfs? What request is too demeaning, what suggestion beneath us? I found, as I considered the revenue waiting to clear in my Fiverr account, that I was having difficulty answering those questions.

Phil writes about several websites where people can pick up some extra money by doing various "gigs" for very little compensation.

While most people would probably say, "I wouldn't work that hard for such small amount of income (because it is way beneath me)," there are always going to be people that would want to try to get their foot in the door for much better "gigs" down the road! Of course, we're talking about 21st century America, though. People want that instant gratification for their efforts. And in reality, it doesn't quite work that way.

For example, a good friend of mine swept the sidewalk for a small businessman downtown for very little money. He ended up as a store manager for that employer, and eventually opening up his own store which has been very successful. How many people out there would sweep a sidewalk without believing it was "beneath them?" Well, that friend did it, and he was rewarded.

What Phil wrote today absolutely blew me away! It may have taken most of the morning for it to soak in, but I got the point. And I hope you do, too, if you so happened to have come across this post or Phil's column. Can you imagine how impressed a potential employer would be if they saw you putting effort into something with very little reward? Or, will they just take advantage of you because you're willing to work for less? Really? If that's your attitude, I'll just be blunt: Stay broke!

It is said that everyone has a price. In a challenging economy – one suffering under the yoke of President Obama's hostility to capitalism and free enterprise – this has never been more true. The United States is mired in an economic malaise – a crisis of national morale, collective self-image and financial realities that feels like the Carter years. As Democrats agitate for more spending, ordinary men and women scrape and scrimp and save.

As we struggle financially, the wages for which we are willing to toil decrease. For more Americans than ever before, their price is a mere $5. I should know; I'm one of them.

The website is called "Fiverr." It is an online marketplace where those who sign up answer the question, "What would you do for five dollars?" Those who sign up explain what goods or services they are willing to offer for five bucks. Customers choose from among these, provide special instructions if needed, and then pay their "fiver," which is held by the Fiverr website until the job is successfully completed. If the job is canceled or the seller does not deliver on time, customers may have their funds returned to them. The website gets one dollar of every successfully completed five-dollar gig, which is how it stays in business.

The success of the site has spawned a number of similar sites, like Outsourcerr (which bills itself as a "Fiverr alternative"), TenBux (where everything is 5 or 10 dollars; the basic concept is identical to Fiverr's), Telegigz ("Gigs through telecommunication," where the prices offered and paid vary more widely), and Jobs for 10 (an "online micro jobs site" offering 5-, 10- and 20-dollar tasks).

Fiverr has been profiled in several different publications. Jackie Loohauis-Bennett at JSOnline described it as a great way to get some "quick help on a small project." Leena Rao at TechCrunch raved that the site is "kind of brilliant and also entertaining." Lifehacker correctly pointed out that the idea is both simple and clever, while the Wall Street Journal's online blog declared Fiverr the result of mixing "unemployment, frugal consumers and Internet boredom." Curious, I decided I wanted to experience the site from the inside, to see what all the fuss was about.

First, I forked over my own five bucks – and then again – to see what buying a "gig" from a Fiverr seller was like. (Fiverr has its own jargon; the jobs offered and bought are all "gigs.") One Fiverr seller said she would broadcast the message of my choice to her 400,000 Twitter followers. I paid my money, waited for proof of the sent message (which was offered promptly) ... and nothing happened. Not a single new follower or inquiry resulted from the attempt to promote my websites and Twitter account. Disappointed, I went back to the Fiverr gigs listing.

A craving to control ~ By Henry Lamb

Progressives are the unintended consequence of the collision of ideas offered by Karl Marx and those of Adam Smith – the product of pure communism colliding with laissez-faire capitalism. Free-market capitalists see government regulations as a detriment to profit; progressives see government regulations as the way to control the behavior of both profit-makers and largess-takers.

For most of the last century, progressives in both major parties have controlled the federal government. The current administration's quest for control exceeds even the remarkable efforts of the Wilson and Roosevelt administrations. The Obama administration – supported by progressive allies in Congress – intends to control virtually every facet of human activity.

Capitalists were appalled when Obama took over General Motors; progressives, socialists and communists applauded. Capitalists could not believe that Obama's czar had the audacity, and the power, to dictate the salary of top executives of companies that took federal bailout money; progressives, socialists and communists danced with glee.

Ordinary citizens stood up and screamed "hell no" to Obamacare. Obama ignored them. He twisted arms and Senate rules to ram it through anyway, with provisions that require private insurance companies to insure people with pre-existing conditions, and to keep costs and profits to 20 percent of gross sales. Progressives, socialists and communists knew they were in control.

Have a selfish Thanksgiving ~ By Patrice Lewis

There's at least three kinds of people that love Socialism or Communism: People that like to control people with big government, government workers that really don't have to work that hard to have it made and keep their jobs, and people that don't like to work but still want equal results for unequal effort (the entitlement mentality of social justice).

The only people that think that being prosperous is selfishness are those people that I described at the beginning of this post. And that is the irony of the title chosen by Patrice. Those that prosper the most are probably the least selfish and most compassionate of all people. And that is why I call Thanksgiving, "Thanks & Giving Day." Just sayin'...

The first Thanksgiving happened because people were allowed to be "selfish." The irony today is our government is regulating or even making illegal the very things that pulled the Pilgrims out of their desolate, starving mess: individual initiative, selfish behavior and a strong faith in God.

Thanksgiving is not just about giving thanks for our bounty. It's also about celebrating the fact that only by embracing individual freedom did that bounty come about.

A happy and "selfish" Thanksgiving to you all.

I thought everyone knew this story, but it seems I'm wrong. Most of us are products of the public school system, after all, so it's not surprising that it isn't better known. So let's have a little history lesson, shall we?

Thanksgiving, we've all been taught, came about because the Pilgrims had a bumper harvest after a couple of bad years. Overcome with gratitude toward "the universe" (to use the politically correct non-Deistic term), they participated in "diversity" by inviting the Native Americans to share several days of feasting.

This is all most of us learned about the origins of Thanksgiving. But that, to paraphrase Paul Harvey, is nowhere near the rest of the story.

What was the reason behind the disastrous harvests that nearly wiped out the fledgling Plymouth colony? It was nothing short of communism.

Disillusioned by the greed and materialistic lifestyles of the English upper class, as well as persecuted unmercifully for their religious convictions, a group of puritans departed England for Holland and spent 12 years in that gentle and welcoming land. But the younger generation of puritan children began drifting away from the strict ideals of their elders toward the more worldly and relaxed Dutch lifestyle. Fearful for the state of their children's souls and desperate to escape the contaminating influence of anyone who wasn't puritan, once more they packed up and left. This time they aimed to colonize the New World.

After weeks at sea, they arrived at a bad time of year – December – so all they could do was brace themselves and hunker down. It was a winter of great hardship and hunger, but also a time to dream about the possibilities incumbent in this new land. When spring came, they had a chance to put into practice the pure ideals they envisioned while in England and Holland.

"Their vision of the New World," notes Matthew Burke, "was to build a society constructed on a new foundation of communal sharing and social altruism. Their aim was based on the communism of Plato's 'Republic,' in which there would be no private property, and all work, and the harvest thereof, would be shared in common."

As Gov. William Bradford noted in his diary, the result was famine and starvation "both physically and spiritually."

But why? What could interfere with such lofty and idealistic goals? After all, the Pilgrims were striving "to move to a point where people can work in common for the common good and get back what they need to live a life worthy of human beings," to quote Carl Dix of the Revolutionary Communist Party USA.

The answer is simple: human nature.

The young and healthy men resented working uncompensated for other people. The strong reaped nothing from any extra work they did, and so had the exact same amount as those less fit for work; "this was thought injustice," noted Bradford. The women, called upon to provide "service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc. ... deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could their husbands brook it."

In other words, this happy little experiment in communism failed miserably.

It did more than fail: it led the colony toward horrible starvation in a land that should have been one of plenty.

So the Pilgrims scrapped the whole communal shebang and started from scratch. Everyone was issued a parcel of land. It was up to each family to work that land. They were not responsible for their neighbor's failures; nor could they claim any of their neighbor's successes. In other words, they quite literally reaped what they sowed. "The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn, which before would [allege] weakness, and inability," noted Bradford's diary.

The harsh lesson was that communism is "antithetical with the human nature and spirit. It results in shortages, poverty, resentment and slavery," notes Burke. It also results in laziness, an entitlement mentality and an unwillingness to get off one's butt. After all, what's the motivation to work harder if the fruits of your own labor are forcibly removed and given to someone who will not work?

The result of this practical expression of 2 Thessalonians 3:10 was an unprecedented harvest and a spiritual swelling of gratitude. The Pilgrims were moved by compassion to voluntarily share with those less fortunate. Thus everyone prospered.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the foundation for our modern Thanksgiving: an utter rejection of communism and embracing the natural desire to keep what you've worked for.

Why is this so hard for the progressives to understand?

You see, no matter how many times communism has been tried and has failed – over and over and over again – there are elements in our modern society who are sure this time it will be different. This time people will give up their evil, selfish, materialistic ways and embrace each other in love and harmony. We'll sing Kumbaya while holding hands around a communal fire. What's mine is yours and what's yours is mine. Golly, that sounds swell.

Platform for the 21st century ~ By Henry Lamb

Henry Lamb introduces us to a book by Beverly Eakman, "A Common Sense Platform for the 21st Century." It sounds like a great book, and I will definitely read it, eventually. I am especially curious about what Beverly writes about the political party system and "the effectiveness and potential of third-party initiatives."

This post is just an FYI about a book we should all read, and therefor, there will be no further commentary on my part. Just sayin'...

The book concludes with an insightful discussion of the political party system in the United States, and particularly the effectiveness and potential of third-party initiatives. Eakman examines the role the media play in advancing or destroying political agendas, noting that it is common practice among socialists to ignore the opposition agenda and destroy people who advance an opposing agenda. This tactic was especially successful in the Delaware and Nevada Senate races where the opposition candidates were unmercifully demeaned personally, with no attention paid by the media to the issues the candidates advanced.

This platform for the 21st century could not have arrived at a better time. With the new Congress convening after the holidays, and the next presidential election cycle already under way, this book should be required reading for every elected official, every candidate, campaign worker and, indeed, for every American.

Pundits, politicians, and even ordinary people are mystified by the rise of the tea parties' protest of the Democrats' agenda. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the spontaneous uprising from the grass roots "Astroturf" – just before she lost her gavel to the Republicans. King George imposed his agenda over the objections of subjects – just before he lost both his subjects and his colonies to the power of people in pursuit of freedom.

Once again, people are rising up in defense of freedom against a "… Marxist-like takeover of Congress in 2008 … that launched audacity and intimidation to new heights," says Beverly Eakman in her latest book, titled "A Common Sense Platform for the 21st Century." Eakman contends that the nation may well be at a point in history quite similar to the days leading to the revolution, in which the people had to decide whether to accept the status quo or risk treasure, and even life, to enjoy the freedom endowed by the Creator.

Her concise 120-page book uses the first chapter to analyze the state of the nation and the reasons for it. Eakman, herself an educator, takes direct aim at the nation's education system for training generations of people to focus on the collective rather than the individual, and on government largesse rather than individual responsibility. This emphasis has taught too many people that freedom is less important than comfort. Consequently, she says, "Our nation is devolving into just one more overbearing, top-heavy bureaucracy that controls through intimidation, red tape, paperwork and redistribution under some convenient pretext." Eakman further observes:

Thanks to 40 years of watered-down schooling, most of today's adults do not recall exactly how we got where we are now. Consequently, many of us have become closet Marxist-socialists without even realizing it.

The rise of the tea parties is evidence of a growing rebellion among people unwilling to accept this current reality. This is a time of great opportunity, or great danger. It is a time to realize that the future cannot be left to any political party, but must be guided by solid, proven principles. Eakman examines these principles in the context of current issues. Chapter 2 categorizes America's most pressing issues: constitutional powers; founding ideals; national sovereignty; criminal justice and law enforcement; national defense; economic stability; health care; research; environment; and education. These issues must be addressed from the perspective of constitutional principles, not political expedience.

Chapter 3 is devoted to identifying specific examples of the "train of abuses and usurpations" imposed by a federal government that has been allowed to grow well beyond the size and power ever intended by the founders. As an example of the federal government's ridiculous misuse of power, Eakman offers the required pat down or X-ray of every air traveler to protect against terrorists, while abandoning a 32-mile stretch along the Mexican border where law-enforcement officers are not allowed, for fear of damaging an endangered species. This makes the entire area a safe-zone for smugglers, terrorists and illegal immigrants to enter anytime they wish. Additional examples of current abuses fill Chapter 4. In a very few pages, Eakman provides solid evidence of a government run amok.

The principles that must guide the development and implementation of a 21st-century platform must include: fiscal responsibility; constitutionally limited government; free markets; and an environment of integrity, decency and self control. Chapter 5 gets more specific in its identification of the principles that must be honored: private property rights; non-intervention in the marketplace by government entities; reversal of entitlements and redistribution policies; rededication to America, as opposed to self-defeating "globalization" polices.
