The Media is NOT Helping ~ Ep. 1199 ~ The Dan Bongino Show®

From Dan Bongino's show description for this episode:
In this episode, I address the outrageous media response to the Coronavirus, which is contributing to the panic. I also address the shameless reintroduction of the false 2016 election narratives by the left.
That, in a nutshell, says it all. Yes, maybe the Election 2020 narrative should be, "The Fake News Virus Strikes Again." Yes, pun intended, indeed. The first takeaway from this episode is that the Left-wing MSM Fake News Media is going all out to make this look like President Trump is failing, and that the Coronavirus outbreak is like President George W. Bush's Hurricane Katrina failures (and I am not here to argue if W failed us, when much blame could be directed toward the leadership of New Orleans and Louisiana). In truth, as Dan will tell us here, Coronavirus is serious, and should not be taken lightly. Yet, when it comes to media coverage, the world is ending, the global economy is going in the tank, and really? The R0 (R-not) factor of their coverage virally influencing the economy negatively is apparently going off the charts!

And in the meantime, the liberal MSM wants to rebuild the credibility of the Steele Dossier, when even the FBI found that the report was garbage, umm, just in time for the FAKE NEWS to be put out in an election year, even as they are aware it was all bogus. That is truly sinister.

But, after watching this episode, I did have some solemn thoughts. Before I could even post this, I watched Tucker Carlson Tonight, and saw some very serious things going on. Can you imagine the depressed fans that may not see the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament this year, if they are cancelled? Think about it, as the thought just struck me, would not the leftists in this country be "praying" for us to become all depressed before November 2020? Like Dan says, this country is all about coming out of major catastrophes, we have a good history of that, and we will again.

I can only add, "Thank you, Dan!"

Obama: Transforming America ~ By Henry Lamb

The War Powers Act says:
The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities … are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces"
As a candidate in 2007, Obama knew better. He told the Boston Globe:
The president does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.
As president, he doesn't seem to care what the Constitution or the War Powers Act say. He considers the Constitution to be a "flawed" document he alone has the wisdom to correct.

Obama's foreign policy is transforming America.

Here is the thing: Politicians always promise things that they know the voters want, and they rarely deliver. But here's the other thing: Obama told America what he wanted to do to transform America during the 2008 campaign, and he still managed to be elected. And shockingly, he has delivered on way too much of the agenda he promised. And then, there are the promises that John Stossel says Obama did not deliver on:

It took me an extra day to get this great column by Henry Lamb posted. I wanted to make sure that I would be able to add further value to what he had to say. Well, as it turned out, there wasn't much more I could write that would fill in any blanks. Henry had it covered. But, at least I found the above video that illustrates much of what is covered in Henry's first paragraph.

And here is one last thing... When those of us on the Right have something to point out about Obama and the Left, it isn't "nasty, smarmy things." No, we're just letting people know what it was that Obama promised, and it is in his own words. It isn't just about which parts of the Obama agenda that have succeeded or failed that really matters. It is the fact that he made his agenda known: Transform America. And I think the results of that transformation will not be pretty. The very scary part is that it really seems to be intentional. Very scary, especially for the fact that Obama has announced that he is running in 2012. I'm just sayin'....

Editor's note: Listen to this column online.

He said he was going to do it. He explained why he was going to do it. He even said how he was going to do it. He has been doing it since the day he took office.

To be fair, he did take office at a time when the economy was on the brink of disaster. Of course, he and others of his philosophical ilk caused both the housing bubble and its collapse – no matter how hard they deny it. Organizations such as ACORN, where Obama cut his teeth as a community organizer, demanded that banks fund mortgages for people who had no hope of repaying them. Democrats in Congress made it easy for banks by guaranteeing the loans through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Two months before the 2008 election, the U.S. government had to bail out the two failed financial institutions to the tune of $15 billion.

During eight years under the Bush administration, the national debt increased by $4 trillion ($500 billion per year.) These years included the attack on the World Trade Centers, the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and Hurricane Katrina, as well as the explosion of the housing bubble. Obama added $4 trillion to the national debt in 421 days. And his "spreading the wealth around" has created a debt that will burden future generations for years to come.

Obama's economic policy is transforming America.

Despite the absence of constitutional authority, or a single Republican vote, Obama's health-care plan not only deepens the public debt, but also forces previously free citizens to purchase a product designated by the government. Never before has the federal government presumed to dictate what its citizens must buy. Moreover, Obama and his Democratic majority in Congress used bizarre procedures to force "Obamacare" into law. By so doing, Obama has demonstrated that he believes his ideas on governance to be superior to the founders', and that achieving his goals is far more important than any rules or procedural restraints.

Obama chooses not to enforce federal drug laws relating to marijuana, or to allow his Department of Justice to prosecute Black Panthers who stood – with billy club in hand – in front of polling places to intimidate white voters. But he quickly sues a school district for not allowing a Muslim teacher to take three weeks off to go to Mecca.

Obama's social policy is transforming America.

The Golden Horde ~ By Patrice Lewis

How are "Black Friday" shopping days and survival preparation for disasters (natural or man made) related? In this column, Patrice ties it all together. The emphasis is on being a "Prepper," which means being prepared for whatever might happen. There are so many good reasons for acting responsibly before something happens, and not depending on someone else or the government to be there for you should everything go down the tubes. Patrice will fill you in on that in this column.

Patrice has written about this subject a few times before. Please check the related articles below. I think you will see that Patrice knows what she is talking about, because she is prepared!
... yet we have thoughtless and unprepared friends, relatives and strangers – most of whom are better off financially than we are – who are doing nothing. But they will blithely come knocking at our door when times get tough and expect us to cheerfully and freely share everything. The reality is, we cannot feed them all.

For some reason I didn't see the parallels. Black Friday came and went and I heard the typical stories of camp-outs, record crowds at store fronts, sprints for the best deals and all the usual stuff.

But it wasn't until no fewer than four readers independently sent me their thoughts as well as YouTube clips to illustrate their points that the similarities were driven home: Black Friday shoppers could well resemble the so-called "Golden Horde" of desperate people sweeping store shelves bare during an emergency.

Video provided by kamrani1990 ~ November 26, 2010

For those unfamiliar with the term, the Golden Horde referred to a vast army of Mongols which swept into Eastern Europe in the 13th century, pillaging and destroying as it went. In modern "Prepper" lingo, it refers to the potential thousands of unprepared urbanites who would be forced to flee cities in a disaster. The actions of the two different types of hordes might well be the same, with one difference: the Mongols were disciplined and well-led.

In one appalling video, the camera caught a pregnant shopper who was knocked to the ground as crowds surged into a store. How the hapless woman avoided being trampled I don't know, because people were stampeding past her with barely a glance and certainly without caring.

Video provided by kopret ~ July 17, 2007

We live a long ways away from big stores, so I've never had the inclination or interest to participate in Black Friday events, particularly the kind that requires camping out for three days in advance. (This year in north Idaho, it was zero degrees on Black Friday, and the thought of sleeping outdoors to snag a $50 laptop seemed ludicrous.) But it wasn't the camping I found disturbing; it was the animal-like behavior shown by the crowds once the store doors opened. They were heedless of fallen shoppers, preferring to surge ahead in order to snatch and growl and snap and bite over a coveted piece of merchandise.

While I recognize that most people participate in these activities in the spirit of good fun and the thrill of the chase – NOT because they're desperate for a Tickle-Me-Elmo or whatever – the videos disturbed me because of how fast the joie de vivre can turn ugly and animalistic when someone is thwarted.

As any survivor of Hurricane Katrina can attest, similar conduct occurs when disaster strikes. Behavior born of fear and desperation strips away the laughably thin veneer of civilization, and subhuman animal instincts rise to the surface. It's been said that Americans are no longer morally equipped to handle an economic collapse. If people will threaten to kill over that last Cabbage Patch doll, what will they do over that last gallon of milk? (Emphasis my own)

Obama's Iranian hostage crisis ~ By Jack Cashill

Those geniuses in the Obama Chicago-style thugocracy can't figure out how to plug a hole. Jack explains how those lefties in power that think we can't run our own lives or businesses without their intrusion always seem to run into problems they have no idea how to solve. Jimmy Carter had his 444 days of the Iranian hostage crisis. Yet when Ronald Reagan took the oath of office, the next thing you knew, the hostages were released. Go figure.

Now we have the environmental disaster from the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, and Obama and his geniuses have no clue what to do, except maybe take BP to court. Sorry, but that doesn't save the wildlife and stop the leak and it definitely isn't doing anything for the fishing and tourist industries along the Gulf coast. But it is even worse than what Jack is talking about with the oil spill. I don't see much sign of the economy recovering, either. They are still digging us further and further into the national debt hole. And ObamaCare isn't going to solve the rising cost of health care anytime soon, if EVER! And in the meantime, illegal immigrants are still spilling across the Southern border with Mexico... except maybe not so much in Arizona anymore thanks to their brave action.

Rahm Emanuel's stupid mantra about never letting a crisis go to waste is backfiring. They aren't looking so smart these days. In fact, every time there's a crisis, they seem to know how to make it worse. Maybe it is time for the Republicans to not let a crisis go to waste, and whip the Democrats this November and in 2012, and take back Congress and the White House. Just sayin'...

Like their president, Obama's best and brightest believe that "human beings don't always do what's in their rational best interest ... but with the proper government rules and incentives, society could be dramatically improved."

Now if just a one of these geniuses could plug a damn hole, we might begin to take their claims of improving stuff a little more seriously.

Almost from the day the oil started gushing in the Gulf of Mexico, conservative pundits were describing the problem as "Obama's Katrina."

In a vacuum, this would not have seemed strictly fair, given that there was nothing about the gusher itself or Obama's initial response to it that would have merited his ownership.

Five years earlier, however, Democratic loyalists and their media allies had for the first time in history bestowed ownership of a hurricane on a president, and they did this even before Katrina made landfall.

After the hurricane hit, this same unholy cabal largely exempted the Democratic mayor and governor from responsibility and attributed all their failures, as well as the routine shortcomings of any federal operation, to President Bush personally.

By the time the media finished slicing and dicing Bush, they had people in New Orleans thinking that Karl Rove had blown up the dikes and Bush himself, in the memorable words of singer Kanye West, had given the military "permission to go down and shoot us."

So Republican turn-around in assigning blame is certainly fair play. Besides, if Obama did not deserve blame for the leak itself, he has come to own the administration's futile response.

Critics continue, however, to use the wrong metaphor to describe his pickle. This is no longer "Obama's Katrina." This is "Obama's Iranian hostage crisis." The Katrina folly ended after a few days. Today, on day 40-something and counting, this is the folly that keeps on embarrassing.

Jimmy Carter can sympathize. For the 444 unhappy days after his new Islamic friends seized our embassy and took the workers hostage, the media microscope zoomed in on his presidential warts.

Although Carter was never much fun to begin with, he could allow himself none while his misunderstood buddies humiliated him and us before the world. The crisis eventually cost him the presidency.

Now, this crisis is magnifying the weaknesses of Obama's presidency, one of which is his fatal reliance on what is sometimes called "Maslow's hammer." Said psychologist Abraham Maslow some years back, "It is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."

Given that Obama, like so many prominent Democrats – Michelle, both Clintons, Kerry, the late Ted Kennedy, John Edwards – is a lawyer surrounded by other lawyers, the tool he has at hand is the lawsuit.

Accordingly, from day 1, Obama has spent his energy not on fixing the problem, but on fixing the blame. He seems to have no greater goal than finding someone to sue or maybe, if AG Eric Holder gets lucky, even imprison.

But unlike health-care reform or financial regulation, Obama cannot just hold a few hearings, harass a few people and pretend he has solved the problem. This problem is just too real.

Obama's futility has proved particularly corrosive because he promised so much. Newsweek's Jonathan Alter, in fact, has titled his new Obama book, "The Promise."

Although critics on the right, me included, have busied ourselves looking to see who is pulling Obama's strings, I am now convinced that if there is a puppet master, it is Obama himself.

This seems counterintuitive. We naturally look for something larger, something more worthy of our concern. But there is something large afoot here, and that is Obama's super-sized ego.

'Barack Obama doesn't care about white people!' ~ By Larry Elder

Larry's column deals with the bias of the mainstream press, along with the way the people of Tennessee are dealing with their flood as compared to how things went following Hurricane Katrina. In reading the bullet points below, you will see why the media has a lack of interest in the devastation in Nashville.
Consider some alternate explanations for the media's comparative lack of interest:
  • Those affected, residents and officials, didn't blame others. WSMV general manager Hale praised the spirit of Tennessee. His station, organizers and entertainers came together with two days notice. Quoting one of his news anchors, Hale said, "'Volunteerism is in our DNA.' When the Red Cross came in they were surprised because so much had already been done."
  • The media's beloved Obama failed to carry Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi. Those states, alien (if not enemy) territory, are simply of minor importance. It's just hard to feel those folks' pain.
  • One Bush critic argued that the president didn't care about New Orleans because it is "black" and "sexy." Perhaps the media's indifference to Nashville is because that city is "only" 25 percent black and therefore "white and redneck."
  • Non-Obama voting, self-reliant "Hee-Haw'ers" who aren't blaming somebody for their troubles just don't make for big news.
Where's the race card when you need it?

"Barack Obama doesn't care about white people!"

No, country star Taylor Swift didn't say that about the president. Nor did any of the entertainers who performed on a telethon to raise money for victims of the historic floods ravaging parts of Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi. None accused the Obama administration of indifference or lack of attentiveness to these floods.

Swift, who contributed $500,000, was one of many stars who appeared on this fundraiser put on by the Nashville NBC affiliate, WSMV, and carried by other Tennessee stations.

In 2005, a Hurricane Katrina relief telethon was carried live on CBS, ABC, Fox and NBC, and more than 25 other channels. A separate telethon was broadcast on MTV, VH1 and CMT. During a Katrina fundraiser, rapper Kanye West accused President George W. Bush of indifference to the plight of those suffering. West said, "George W. Bush doesn't care about black people."

Hurricane Katrina was catastrophic. It caused over 1,500 deaths, with property damage estimated at near $100 billion and hundreds of thousands of people displaced. The failures of local and state responders, the widely criticized federal response and subsequent finger-pointing made a tragically newsworthy story even more so.

And, at the moment, there is no shortage of significant news. Major stories include: a naturalized American Muslim terrorist admitted placing a car bomb in Times Square; an underwater oil rig erupted in the Gulf of Mexico near the mouth of the Mississippi, creating the largest domestic oil spill since the Exxon Valdez; Arizona passed a controversial anti-illegal alien law that critics claim "legalizes racial profiling"; Greece faces a financial collapse.

But has the traditional media devoted the time and attention warranted by the historic floods?

"We have been astonished by the lack of national coverage of this disaster," Elden Hale, general manager of Nashville's WSMV, told me. He acknowledged that the story competed with the Times Square terrorist and the Gulf oil spill. He said, "But still ..."

How big a deal are these floods?

Hale said his area received 15 inches of rain in two days, a phenomenon of "biblical proportions." People, he said, still haven't grasped the dimensions of this disaster. The rainfalls are the highest since records have been kept. The resulting floods have been described as the greatest tragedy to hit the area since the Civil War. So far, 30 peopled are listed dead, the count expected to grow as floods recede and bodies are recovered. "Rivers have been created where none existed before," Hale said, "and people who've lost homes didn't carry flood insurance because these areas never flooded before."

Why haven't the floods gotten more attention?

"I don't want to get into that," Hale said, "but you and I both know they care more about the two coasts than they do Middle America." Did NBC network express any interest in airing the telethon? "No," Hale said, "but in fairness, I didn't offer it to them. We intended for it to be a local affair."

As to the lack of media interest, a Newsweek senior writer tried to explain. Unlike the Times Square and oil rig stories, he wrote, the floods lacked "plot twists," a "political hook," and the "Nashville narrative wasn't compelling enough to break the cycle."

No plot twists? No political hook? Not compelling enough?
